I don't know why people are so quick to state definitively that we 'won't be winning the league'.
Sure, we are currently third and Arsenal are in fine form and city are...city, but win the Liverpool game and we have an excellent chance.
Lose that and well...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We are 11pts behind with a game in hand and we are trying to compete on 4 fronts (technically 3 now as one cup is won)
We aren't winning the league. Not this year anyway.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Got to agree. We need to just keep on plugging away and we might get a chance. But I think it is a bridge too far this season. A bit mental that we are even considering it though - especially after the first 2 games. We probably needed to lose those to get the club to splash out on Cas. But even if we have won just 1 of those games we would be right in the mix.
We were signing Casemiro anyway, Elvis, from what has been said. Had we not facked around so long trying to get De Jong, and got our business done sooner, things may have looked a little different for us.
Welcome back by the way, TRC. Hope all is well.

Ah right, wasn't aware of that. Either way, 3 points in one of those games would have given us a reasonable chance. As it is, I think it is just a little too far for us. But we have to keep on pushing.
What would you rather we do now? With the League Cup under our belt, would you rather we rotated in the FA and Ropey and concentrated on the league, or just try for all competitions?
You must have heard about Casemiro calling his agent to tell the club to get the deal done after Brentford? It was all going on before that game.
I don’t think we are capable of winning the league. We’ve got too many games like Palace and Leeds in us, in my opinion. Arsenal had a bit of a wobble but they just don’t have as many days like that as we do, and have more days where they look imperious. They’re a fantastic side.
With that in mind, I think we should be looking to make the cups our highest priority. We’ve every chance of winning both. City and Arsenal are in those cups, but we’ve shown we are capable of beating them and they’ll both have their eye on the league anyway.

Ah yeh, I did hear about that. I have selective memory these days. Probably due to the amount of weed I smoked in my youth.
I think i would agree with your assessment. I reckon we will still have a couple of off days somewhere along the line that will leave us ultimately short in the league. Would be great to win another of the cups. I would actually prefer the Europa I think, just to get that experience of the group winning in Europe under the belt. But either would do.
I agree that winning the league is very unlikely - saw something that had us down as 3% probability, which looks about right. But I wouldn't want us to prioritise the cups in that light. For one thing, a couple of weeks where we win and the other two drop points would see that probability shift quite significantly. For another, the less we prioritise the league, the more likely we are to have more wobbles, and it wouldn't take too many wobbles to have us back in the 4th-5th place race, rather than cruising in 3rd. I also think that in terms of momentum going into next season, finishing the league having broadly kept pace with City and Arsenal to the very end, and only missing out on being a serious title contender due to that awful start, would be similarly helpful to winning another pot. Dropping off in the league after a promising run has echoes of Solskjaer.
As others said: welcome back TRC. Hope you're well.
Hmmm. Just looking at the fixtures and Arsenal still have to play Liverpool, City and Newcastle away.
City have still got Liverpool and Newcastle, but both at home.
It is going to be a tight finish in the run-in I reckon. Could go down to the final day.
Europa should be the priority, for sure. Not least because it’s a bigger trophy than the FA Cup, it would also make us pot one in the CL next season.
RR, issue is that we could end up like we’ve seen under Ole where we end up flopping in the cups at the end because we’ve not adequately rotated the squad. Getting the balance between momentum and rotation is something we’ll need to be conscious of.
With regard to getting pulled back into the pack below, I think beating Liverpool will go a long way to pretty much cementing a top four place. Them and Newcastle don’t look like they’ll put the sort of run together needed to overtake us.
Thanks fellas. All is well.
The days seem brighter at the club these days for sure.
I see the cautionary remarks about us prioritising the league but the gap isn't insurmountable.
We should just take one game at a time and thankfully, he rotated somewhat (not nearly enough) yesterday against West Ham. I look around at the clubs in Europe and there is no juggernaut; all teams have flaws and we have as good a chance as ever before. Damn those two opening losses.
Dare to dream I say.
We could have done with Grimsby rather than Fulham in the next round.
A win against Liverpool would be great. Excusing some key players from playing 90 minutes last night hopefully raised our chances of doing that. I endorse rotation in the cups!
By the way, I gather that Real Betis will be missing their key creative player Nabil Fekir. Would be good if those fixtures weren't too energy sapping.
Looking at their recent results it seems they’re scoring goals but concede quite a few, but Fekir is their best player, by all accounts.

I think he has done wonders to stop the rot but some are going a bit overboard. It's man United. Paying over the odds and spending badly almost became the norm.
I'd say the urgent level is the bare minimum you'd expect from United with their investment but United have still conceded too many goals. United competing for CL and league should be the marker. This is a move in the right direction 100%. United game management is much much better and they have a style of play now but they still have lots of work to do.
With Chelsea, Liverpool and even city falling off its kinda hard to gauge things for next season. Newcastle make a couple of shrewd moves this summer and top 4 alone is going to be crazy next year. If city return to their normal level next season it's going to be hard for anyone to win it losing more than a few games. Can I see this United team going through a season losing just a couple of games? Not yet.
Newcastle have lost 2 all season and lack fire power. With their resources and a clear idea of where they need to improve I see them being a big problem next season.
Newcastle have lost so few because they’ve drawn so many, and lack firepower but also because they have played such a defensive brand of football hence all the draws.
If they start to focus more on attacking, there’s nothing to say they will keep their impressive defensive stats. Those draws might turn into wins, but also losses imo if they open up a bit.
Also, claiming we may be where we are due to Chelsea and Liverpools failings is a little harsh, you need to actually look at the points picked up (since our first 2 losses of the season), we’re right up there with Arsenal over a very long period of the season now, and that’s while also managing 3 cup competitions with a mismatched squad of 4 previous managers making.
If ETH keeps it up and the guys above him do their jobs well, the more this squad starts to be shaped in his image the more these runs of impressive results will start to look like the norm for us imo.

It's a squad that's had vast sums spent on it, and United have a certain level of expectation. I'd say where United are now is the minimum.
I just think the progress and it's speed can make soke.go a bit overboard. United have conceded a lot of goals. Top scorer is Rashford and he hasn't hit crazy numbers. A player like Kane is a priority I feel for United to think about PL titles.
Chelsea and Liverpool won't be this bad next season so I do think it's a valid point. It isn't solely responsible obviously but I feel next season we will get a real marker of where United are at. Plenty of players for the manager to sell to generate funds too.
Arsenal have done great with no Europe. They've taken full advantage and spent heavily to back the boss. I just feel City and Liverpool have set the bar super high, and this year the league is more forgiving with losses. If city go back to that level again It's hard to look elsewhere. That's a huge jump for United required. Going 10 games unbeaten is dif to 20-30 games.
Maybe the league gets harder and teams just start losing more like the old days, who knows.
