It’s a disgrace. And people will genuinely still try and pretend that the BBC is impartial.

Can we all agree that cancel culture has gone too far?

It'll be interesting to see how the usual mob that bleat on about cancel culture react when it works in their favour for once, especially when the people they're cancelling are giving more evidence based statements.

This kind of thing should worry people on the conservative side of politics as well as the left. It serves us all well to have a national broadcaster that is independent of government, and feels confident enough to hold whichever party is in power to account through objective reporting and questioning. Governments have always tried to pressurise the media and the BBC in particular, but never in my living memory to politicise its leadership as brazenly as this. Let's not forget that this exists in a wider context of also nominating ultra-partisan figures to media regulation and giving police extensive powers to crack down on protesters who might cause a nuisance.

If you're a supporter of the current government and not too bothered about this, consider the fact that it looks very likely that Labour will be in power in around 18 months. And that governments of any ideology can be tempted to hold on to levers of power that their predecessors created.

I'm sure many will continue to claim it is the epitome of left-wing wokery.

The fearless protectors of free speech from wokery and cancel culture have been assiduously silent about the appointment of Tory activists to key positions of the BBC, Florida banning books and Tennessee burning them, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

This is what is the most daft thing about it, the Tories are laying foundations that are there to be abused by their opponents.

They may feel that their opponents are too ‘woke’ to become as corrupt as they are, and they are probably right, but it’s still a dangerous thing to do for any political institution as it so easily leads into corruption.

Ian Wright has just confirmed he won't be taking part in MOTD this weekend.

(As an aside, Ian Wright is a candidate for best living human being in the world.)

I was just looking at some of Andrew Neil's and Alan Sugar's past public statements while working for the BBC, which attracted no censure. They are far more directly party-political. Sugar was actually urging Labour voters to defect to vote for Boris at the last election.

Lineker in the past has called for Corbyn to leave the Labour party. Didn’t matter then.

….

For sure.

Andrew Neil's output at The Spectator whilst he was the BBCs senior political commentator seemed to have gone unchallenged.

Well he's obviously pizzed some people off. Plus it's useful to try and get the working class right wing fighting against the normal working class people over things that aren't Tories murdering hundreds of thousands of people or implementing voter suppression tactics.

Labour: “The BBC’s cowardly decision to take Gary Lineker off air is an assault on free speech in the face of political pressure. Tory politicians lobbying to get people sacked for disagreeing with Government policies should be laughed at, not pandered to. BBC should rethink.”

Wow, Labour grew a pair for once.

You mean on the claim that Ian Wright is the world's best person? I thoroughly recommend listening to his Wrighty's House podcast. Despite having a bit of a Gooner lens on the world, it's such a pleasure. He and his regular guests talk about football in such a generous and insightful way. Wright has incredible eloquence, heart, conscience and warmth. This comes across much more clearly than in the soundbite world of punditry on mainstream media.

I'm also aware that this is reflected in his activities behind the scenes in providing advice and encouragement to young players, and vital support to projects helping marginalised groups.

Good article RR. It is genuinely very worrying. It was good to know that the BBC was impartial, and in times of misinformation it gave what it believed was the truth in the news, and a voice from all parties in political debate.
It does not leave any popular media impartial, and that, without exaggeration is a catastrophe

I imagine you're rather pleased with yourself at saying this to people who have reservations about authoritarian governments in the Arabian peninsula. But quite recently you were suggesting that criticism of Qatar was racist / tribal. The fact that the same people who don't want United to be owned by an authoritarian state are up in arms about authoritarian tendencies in the UK government demonstrates the opposite. It's the authoritarianism we don't like. Whereas your position turns out to be simply amoral.

Also thoroughly recommend the sister podcast Stadio. The presenters of that often join Wrighty's House. Listening to those two shows takes me to my happy place during commutes.
