Maybe RB&W lived in Naples in the 80s?

I've always said Maradona is my favourite, not best. He's what I want to see in a footballer.

I'd be interested to see how Berbatov would do. He's the
Penthouse Weghorst.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I did think about Berba, but ultimately he didn't do enough at United for me. That said, he would really suit the role that ETH asks Weggy to play.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What, pressing? Not really
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Fair point. I meant more playing deeper, holding it up and bringing others into play.

No doubt, but 40 something old blokes definitely hold him to a higher level than others I think because he impacted at a time when football meant more to them.

I just find it funny when old blokes often go on about how Best was the greatest and no one else would understand.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unless you watched football regular, live in the 60s you will never know how good Best was. What you see on Youtube is a small fraction of his United career. Imagine what you havent seen.

I find it mad that people say Messi or Ronaldo are the GOAT when clearly they are not. Maradona was IMO.
See? Its just opinions about players from different generations that cant be proved right or wrong. Football criteria changes so much every few years its impossible to compare.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your first paragraph applies to the second paragraph on Maradona.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I saw a lot more of Maradona on TV.

My point is that its just my opinion. That's all. It means very little to others. Yet some fanboys like to say that Messi is actually the greatest... as a fact that has now been proven as Argentina won the World Cup.

I only saw Maradona live once in a competitive game and he he was rubbish. He was found in Billy Garton's pocket after the game.

You can’t have seen much. Serie A wasn’t broadcasting in Britain until the early 90’s.

It’s more than just fanboys that say Messi is the greatest. At least the people saying it have seen the majority of his career. Rather than a few games of Maradona and Pele at the world cup and then making the same definitive proclamations.

……

We saw a fair bit Maradona back then. Highlight reels were played to death during world cups and international matches featuring Argentina.

Obviously nowhere near to the extent of todays coverage.

I just said I saw more of Maradona on the TV than I did Best. B.ut then I saw Best play more than I did Maradona.

Ive even played with Best! But that's another story.

Its just an (my)opinion for what it's worth. Maradonas international career was well documented on TV, too. Im not making definitive proclamations (That's a tad strong I think). Sorry if it triggers you. But then, your man Messi was great too. And Ronaldo. As were the old timer, black and white charlatans, such as Best and Pele who cant be considerd apparently. Its hard to compare them as they are all from different eras.

posted on 15/3/23

But the point was that what you claimed about Best applies to Maradona. It doesn’t trigger me, I’m just pointing out your contradiction. I also didn’t suggest you made those definitive proclamations (although you did when suggesting Messi isn’t the best).

Too young to have seen Parker, Sharpe, Blackmore, McClair and Kanchelskis.

Although Rooney was on the slide from 2011 he still gets in all day. Probably followed by Butt just ahead of peak Fletcher.

Berbatov and Nani were two of the most overrated players in my time watching United and get more overrated as time goes by.

Both technically brilliant and both had short lived good spells but nowhere near as good as some make out.

Good grief

I suppose that saying I think messi isnt the goat IS a definitive proclomation to make for some people. To others its just somebody elses opinion on a daft football forum. Unless it really does trigger you somehow.

And that saying that footballers who arent documented well on TV and film unless you personlly watched them every week live rather than a handful of times, like Maradona and I presume you include Pele in this..... are not candidates to judge such accolades.

youre a daft sod sometimes, aren't you.

This is pretty definitive.

I never said those players can’t be considered the goat. I was questioning your logic when it comes to best and how it contradicts what you say about Maradona.

It’s not my fault you are unable to follow these simple points.

I loved watching Berba, agreed he wasn't a great for us. But, as previously reported, the first time I saw him play was a rainy evening game at OT. A ball was hoofed up into the air, Dimitar glanced at it, put down his book by Kante and glass of slivovic, strolled over, absently stuck his foot out, and by some kind of Slavic magic the ball stopped, dead. I saw him perform the same thing umpteen times. He it was worth the price just to see that.

I respect your opinion 52 but I'd rather a less gifted player that tries his heart out over a few silky touches.

SAF never fully trusted Berba despite making such an effort to sign him.

I think he knew pretty quickly that the signing was a mistake.

I love watching players like Berbatov but I guess we were fortunate enough to have others who could step up when he wasn't doing enough so we could still enjoy those moments of skill. In a squad with far less options I can imagine Berbatov would become far more frustrating.

Oh I agree Process, there's a lot more than trapping a ball, but it was just such a magic skill.

Yes it is a difinitive statement of my opinion Which I stand by.

Maradona was more well documented on TV and film than others before him. And I only saw him play once in real life. I saw Best more. Which is probably more times than most people have with their own goats. Like you probably..But not as much as those players who followed him.... but enough to form a valid opinion.

I cant believe you are having trouble with this.

It was.

He was on Gary Neville's soccerbox not so long ago and he was almost proud of the fact that he didn't run much.

It actually annoyed me because I was thinking what a player he could have been with more effort.

You keep contradicting yourself, would seem you’re the one having trouble. I don’t really care now.

Contradict and definitive proclamation. Big words to play with on here.

Pointless is on the TV right now if you want to catch it. Your cup of tea, me thinks.

I’ve already been playing Pointless with this discussion, it would seem.

Rooney and fletcher

posted on 15/3/23

Right now the team would need a CF and a CM.

So for me it would be Rooney and Butt.

Would've picked Kanchelskis, but we are ok for wide players.

Shame it ended like it did for him at OT, think he could have gone on to be an all time PL great.
