If only we could bring back The Holy Trinity!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, it would be interesting to see what Kendal Ball and Harvey would make of playing for United today.
Meanwhile, I think you might mean the United Trinity.
"George Best - the most naturally gifted player ever."
I wasn't around when he played so it's vitually impossible for me to really know but I do find that it is only United fans and some British fans who say this. I know he had it tough playing for NI but you rarely if ever hear people say similar things about Best outside of United fans. Cue old fans shouting at me for not knowing anything.

That's probably because in the 1960s the English Football League was only watched by British people live at the matches in the 1960s. And best played for Northern Ireland, who didn't play many games in them days anyway, and never had a chance of qualifying for the Euros and World Cups. He also never played in a FA Cup final which was the only match people watched live on TV outside the UK
However Pele did call him the greatest player in the World at one point. And he won the Ballon d'Or in 1968. And teams like Real Madrid Benfica and Inter Milan singled him out as a unique talent to be 'dealt with' when United played them in Europe.

It is impossible for us that have never seen him play in real life to give a fair assessment. I know that some Brazilians argue that Garrincha was more naturally talented than Pele, yet you don't hear him get mention very often. In terms of natural ability, I would say that Ronaldinho is best that I have seen.

Denis Law - probably only Malcolm MacDonald could head a ball as well.
Bobby Charlton - Only Peter Lorimer of Leeds Utd and possibly one of the Hibberts who played for Newcastle had a harder measured shot.

I'd like to just acknowledge the fact that this is the person who complained about me going off topic in the sports movies thread yesterday.

I know, right? The OP clearly says TWO players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Any two of the holy trinity would work for me.
but you rarely if ever hear people say similar things about Best outside of United fans.
….
I have heard it said by plenty of people outside of United fans.
Yeah I'm not saying Best wasn't brilliant, he clearly was. I just feel there's maybe a romantisied view of him (especially from United fans) because of his talent, looks, attitude, whatever your own age at the time of watching him, etc. Which is why you often hear him being called the best or most gifted ever when he probably wasn't. Again, I wasn't alive when he played so I can't give a fair view.
I think you hear Garrincha's name around the world more so than Best, but that's largely helped by being in 2 brilliant WC winning sides.

There is at least one Portuguese legend that used to talk about him quite often and at least one Brazilian legend who was the same.
But that's very different as it's now so plenty have very little to compare it with and only see what's in front of them.
I know the game always evolves and fitness improves but statistically those 2 are freaks and will be considered amongst the best for years to come. I don't think Ronaldo will ever be considered the most gifted though, although his dedication is unrivaled IMO.

Yeah totally, I think there's a similarity with guys who watched football as kids in the late 90s, early 00s who probably rate original Ronaldo as greater than he probably was.

No doubt, but 40 something old blokes definitely hold him to a higher level than others I think because he impacted at a time when football meant more to them.
I just find it funny when old blokes often go on about how Best was the greatest and no one else would understand.

Unless you watched football regular, live in the 60s you will never know how good Best was. What you see on Youtube is a small fraction of his United career. Imagine what you havent seen.

See? Its just opinions about players from different generations that cant be proved right or wrong. Football criteria changes so much every few years its impossible to compare.
