Crazy suggestion coming up here but why not just show them the receipt as you leave? I dunno, seems pretty low key and chill to just do that rather than get bent all out of shape and become one of those numbnuts needing to kick off about fack all every other day.

just tell them to feck aff .... you bought the things your walking out they belong to you, they have zero authority to order you to do anything.

they cant detain you, they cant touch you unless they have genuine suspect that you committed a crime and they must articulate why when asked what prompted the suspiscion.

If its on the basis of being store policy , tell them to do one they can tell you or ask you to do $hit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pretty sure if security have suspected that you have stolen something then they can ask to see a receipt? Otherwise everyone could just raid the store and walk out unchallenged?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yes and like I said before they can detain you they need to articulate the exact suspicion or reason they suspect you have comitted a crime. Even then they cannot demand you hand over your property (which at this point is your receipt).

And like I said if its on the basis of store policy they cannot order you to do a single thing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What if they ask you for the receipt and you say no? The receipt is your property and you don't have to produce it to anyone on demand, right?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
exactly yeah they have zero authority to demand your property from you.

A fully licenced security guard with their licence on show for the public to see can detain you in the store if they have reasonable suspicion that you have committed a crime in their store. They can stop you from leaving the store and thats it. they cannot demand you give them any details, they cannot search you, they can just hold you til the police get there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How long can they detain me? And if I didn't do anything wrong can I sue them for false imprisonment of wrongful detainment or something?

So kind of like those barriers you get at train stations where you have to prove that you have purchased the train journey before you leave? Pretty controversial. Although I am sure if you kick up a fuss about your rights, the ticket barrier guy will just let you through. They can't stop you, apparently.

Think we are finding out who the shop thieves are?

I think if there are clear signs at the entrance warning people what they may or may not do on exit then they can do WTF they want and you have the opportunity to take your thieving, er, custom elsewhere.

Reasonable suspicion might be 'we are losing so much gear every week every 2nd shopper must be tanning the place'

Anyway, scan a receipt, sounds like just another deterrent which of course is nothing of the sort to a determined chicken rustler.

not entirely sure how long, there is a limit however obv. they can physically restrain you using reasonable force if your try to escape and all other procedures have been followed.

If they have not followed all procedures to a T you are allowed to use reasonable force to defend yourself from what would be (if they detained you) technically kidnapping.

All of these rights are available to every UK citizen not just security guards, they have the same rights and powers as any other law abiding UK citizen has.

Back in the 80s there was a guy in my local here who'd take orders for meat. Sold it at half the price marked. Never bought anything off him but nicknamed him the Rhinestone Rustler.
Oh and Zach does sausages as well as chicken.
Allegedly.

Here we go again. This is woke culture in full effect. No doubt a load of people will complain about it.

In the US Walmart are having to put up prices because there is so much shoplifting going on. So you want more people to go hungry just because you can't be bothered to let someone scan a receipt on your way out, even though it's not collecting any data on you or doing anything other than proving you purchased the goods.

Some are trying to cancel Sainsbury's for having the audacity to try to prevent shoplifting, boycotts are ongoing

No doubt Lineker will be along soon to give us some thought leadership on the matter - people should be allowed to shoplift, this is like 1930s Germany etc.

We have TopForm to let us know. Why even worry about it. I'd say the losses don't even make up 0.000000000000006% of their net profit.

Costs the same as petrol wholesale, 17p a litre dearer than petrol though when those parasites add their markup.
