The republic of China constitution says we are the government that represents mainland and Taiwan
====
If you dissect this critically, it carries a lot of info between the lines. If Taiwan is China, why have the distinction in their constitution? It should just say China, not mainland China and Taiwan. Therein is an admission that the two are distinct. How many of their other Islands or offshore territories are mentioned in their constitution?
Does the US Constitution say they represent mainland USA as well as Alaska, Puerto Rico etc? No, it just says the United States of America.

I imagine that might be a major stumbling block for normalising relations then? What proportion of the Taiwanese population could be classed as post-Civil War refugees?

Getting fewer
Without mincing words they’re dying out, that’s why the KMT are finding it harder to get elected these past few years

Most of it is just posturing. They recognize Taiwan in many aspects but kick up a fuss over other aspects. A bit ridiculous really.

I know right
And the media kick up a fuss when China dropped bombs around the island and everyone on the island is getting on with lives as normal. Around the time Pelosi came
They interviewed some old lady on the tv that time asking if they’re afraid. She said: “CCP have been threatening us since I was 10, I’m 80 now and still they’re threatening us ”

Well, it kinda stands to reason that a minority and ever-dwindling % of the population should not be able to dictate issues that are so crucial to the country's relations.
How about the younger population, are/would they be in favour of foregoing the pretence of being the legitimate government of a nation of 1.4bn in exchange for being left alone to get on with their own business?

Yes
The younger generation think they are born Taiwanese, not Chinese. They couldn’t care less about the CCP and have enough problems to deal with when they reach adulthood (same with living in any other country)
So what do we call a person from Taiwan, out of interest ?....and we wish you the best of luck in the future.
