This is my take. Like why would this colleague tell the entire office, why would there be a split in opinion and why would the OP himself seem conflicted? It's trying to make a "clever" point imo.

However, if you can't see the difference in the situations, then you really aren't that clever. Yes, everybody has moral lines and they will often differ but using extreme examples to somehow say there is no limit is a bit silly
