I've a group of friends who do it in the sea every morning. Absolute nutcases but they say it's excellent for their mental health. They still seem mental to me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

When I lived abroad, I had periods where I went sea-swimming every day for a couple of weeks (not before work though!). It was amazing and I looked and felt ten years younger.

I just do cold showers (or turn my warm shower cold for a few minutes at the end in the colder weather). Not sure exactly what benefits it has but it sets me up nicely for the day

doing that is actually good for your skin.

the heat open the pores and cleans them out and the cold water quickly closes them before anything else can get back in.

ChatGPT isn’t ai, it’s clever programming pretending to be ai.

Nah it's definitely AI.

Closest and best compromise I ever experienced was an ice igloo thing in a hotel on Mallorca. Seats were heated so you didn't do an injury but the walls and roof were ice igloo shaped. You got cool gradually without the contact and shock element. Very relaxing and used it every day. No idea if they still have it - was about 12 year ago.

Have cold showers every day and do cold water swimming every other week.

It's absolute brilliant. I know folk with anxiety that find tremendous benefit from it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm curious, what's the science behind it? I get that there might be a physical benefit but what's the mental bit about?

I'm not sure. It might be that the cold becomes a singular focus that causes people to become very present in the moment. It triggers the mammalian diving reflex when your head goes under which is good for a waking you up but I've no idea of the science.

Had one at our gym until legionnaires was discovered. Nothing better than having a shave in a sauna then jumping in a plunge pool to close the pores. You could never cool down once they removed it. A few of the lads were off on the lash after a sauna, the taxi they used had to keep pulling over because the windows kept steaming up.🥵

Of course I don't do it.
If it even entered my head I would pour something red with depth and soul, and chuckle to myself for daft ideas.

Isn’t it something to do with heart rate? Anxiety increases heart rate, the cold shower may help with resetting that, as maybe lowering core temp?!
