Is fan fatigue even a thing?

The op definitely has a point. Football is big money for the governing bodies of the game. More fixtures = more money. This season more than any with a world cup jammed in the middle of it. Summer always feels like a time to de-stress. Unless you are a United fan when it is time to obsess about transfers! I call it Sneijder time - longer standing united contributors will remember that summer.

I feel for you stretty. All the pints of Carling and balti pies must be weighing heavy by this stage of the season. My thoughts and prayers are with you ๐Ÿ™

You've haven't played too many games more than other teams and the world cup affected other teams too. It's being over egged and a bit of an excuse too.

We’ve played 14 games more than some of the teams around us in the league, and sent more players to the WC.

I was there, Gandalf. I was there 3,000 years ago when first the name 'Sneijder' was linked with Manchester United.

Look at the state of Liverpool and especially Chelsea this season after playing 63 games each last season.

United will end up with 62 games played so it really could mess you up next year if you don’t get your summer business right.

If any of your players have been overplayed there’s a decent chance their form will go off a cliff next season. Look at Mason Mount this year for example and I’m sure there are plenty at Liverpool.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is what I’m really worried about. We’ll secure a top four spot fine, but next season may prove difficult.

The club needs to give the players a proper rest before reporting for preseason training, and then we need a much shorter and lighter preseason schedule than usual.

Fans don’t appreciate the impact that these kind of seasons have on players’ long term fitness.

It has been relentless hasn't it. Mad looking at the table and we still have two games in hand on some teams! It will be a 'and breathe' moment once it's all over

Yea, i'm always ready for the summer break, when it comes around.. Taking a big chunk out of a Saturday or Sunday is disruptive, especially as the weather warms up and there are more fun things to do in beer gardens!

Last night really got me thinking the same OP.

I couldn’t watch the first half, but watched the second. Wow what a mess that was.

I’m tired, and sad, of 10 years of rubbish from the team, and even worse from the owners.
We rarely win games comfortably even when we go 2 up. We never lose unluckily by a single goal after playing quite well in a tight game. We get stuffed.
It’s just depressing even in a relatively good season that it’s littered with games like last night and Sevilla, Brentford etc.

I’d happily take 4th and just play the cup final now, no more games. Half of them aren’t even on tv! Which is another mess in this country but don’t get me started.

The summer will be a let down too especially if the owners are still hanging around.

On a positive I think ETH said Garnacho is training on the grass now. So could be back soon if he doesn’t waltz off to the U20WC.

If we have money to spend then this window is huge. 3 or 4 good signings could give us something extra for next season but I still don’t expect a proper title challenge. A change in player mentality is also key, will we see it?

How so? How many more than Man City have you played? By the time the season is over you will have played about the same number of games.

By this time last season we'd played one more game than you and had more games to play until the end of the season than you. And we were playing in the CL, not the Ropey League.

Nobody else in Europe has a squad with the depth of City’s, and we aren’t scrapping with them for a top four finish.

We’ve played more than ten games more than the likes of Newcastle, Villa, and Brighton, and sent more players to the WC.

As I’ve pointed out elsewhere, it isn’t just the games and the aggravated micro-injuries, fatigue and short recovery times they bring, it’s the training sessions.

Newcastle will have had around a month’s worth of additional days on the training pitch than United over the season.

Exactly. They aren't even challenging for the league, are out of Europe where they played in the 2nd tier, where you can get away with resting players unlike the CL and have just formality league games as top 4 is pretty much wrapped up. They're have until June to just prepare for the FA cup final.

Easy to say they sent the most to the world cup when really it's just one or two more than the next team.

This is a team that spent 220+ million in the summer, added Weghorst and Sabitzer in Jan. Liverpool have less depth and last season had played more games at the same time, still in Europe where they went all the way to the final, chasing City for the league losing by a point, and wrapped it up by winning the FA cup.

And they're out here talking about fan fatigue. Puhlease!

Well, it doesn’t happen to everyone.

It happens to a) teams which play in Europe, and b) go deep in all three cup competitions they’re playing in.

Which is pretty rare. It usually happens to maximum one club per season.

And it has never happened with a five week break for a WC resulting in a) even more games for players and b) even more intense fixture congestion.

I’m not saying that United are some kind of unique special case in all of history, but the idea that Brighton, Newcastle and Villa’s squads, for example, have had it more or less as tough as United’s this season, which is what some people are making out, is downright hilarious.

Depth wise, I actually think this is one of our weaker squads over the last ten years, which is why we haven’t used that many players compared to others.

Think the way we play significantly helps with the volume of matches. That and the squad building at other teams has been pants.

posted on 28/4/23

I maybe agree that it isn't the very strongest squad you've had over the last decade metls, but it's still way out ahead of everyone else's.

If I'm not mistaken, you only have three outfield players who've started more than 23 PL games. Arsenal have eight. That alone tells something of a story.

All also testament also to the genius of Pep and the quality of your sporting hierarchy, of course.

Again, the world cup affects everyone.

I agree with the last paragraph but what's even more ridiculous is United fans going on about fatigue and number of games for weeks, bringing it up after every bad result. That's a bit pathetic.

Tbf, we're bringing it up after good results too

It's the same story after 60-70 minutes of every game at the moment, whether we're in front, level or behind: the legs visibly go, and we struggle to stay in games.

It's going to be a limp over the finish line for us.

No I agree, like I said I think a lot of that is down to errors by others (Chelsea being the most obvious example!)
