Adios Phil Jones

I feel a bit sorry for him as he became a figure of ridicule but as you said he's made a fortune from doing nothing.

How he got 3 contracts at United is nothing short of disgraceful management of the club.

I believe that was Rosso's tiktok channel, Robb

He's made a lot of money yes, but I'm sure he will feel little sense of fulfilment out of his career as a footballer. He could've been a top player.

We should've let him go 5 years ago mind you.

He's rich so sympathy is limited.
But some players would have none. He has some because he would have loved to have played, and he gave it his all when he did.
Martial though au revoir, don't come back.

Gutted really. A fantastic servant to the medical staff and a trailblazer in the field of pulling funny faces on the field.

How did he last 12 years at the club

Has he had a testimonial yet?

He was self-aware enough to not ask for one.

Said only his parents would turn up.

That wasn't a wind up by the way. I know he hardly deserves one but just because he's been there over a decade.

Is his career over now?

He’s been stealing a living for years. But I do feel a bit sorry for him.

I feel for him to be honest, can't be good for his mental health to have worked to try and recover only to face repeated setbacks. While the money helps, undoubtedly, I'd bet it must be quite a depressing situation all told.

Honestly I don't mind the club sticking by him for as long as they did.

Shame that he's only really remembered for making funny faces & being injured, I don't think he was anywhere near as bad a player as a lot of people make out. I think it's pretty awful that so many places that are covering his leaving are using those goofy looking images, quite disrespectful.

Agreed, he would have been at least a very good squad option if it wasn’t for the injuries.

On a separate note on the other end of the spectrum and perhaps Rosso can confirm whether this is true - I saw on tiktok (so dubious source) that Bruno has never missed a game with an injury in his entire career. If true that is incredible…
-----------------
Thought I'd try and fact check this because it seems unbelievable - looks like he has missed 2 games through illness (once with us and once with Sampdoria) but I can't find any through actual injury.

The bloke is a genuine machine.

Longest servant at the club along with Coco isnt he?

According to Transfermarkt, this is the full extent of Bruno’s injury/illness history:

21/22 - Ill for 2 days - Missed one United game
18/19 - Leg Injury for 10 days - Missed no games
16/17 - Flu for 2 days - Missed one Sporting game

Facking bonkers if true.

I think I've had more injuries than that just this week

What I respect so much about it isn't that he doesn't get injuries (because of course, he does) but that he's probably played parts of his career through pain that most others would've found unbearable.

You could argue it isn't wise but you have to respect it nonetheless.

It's a shame for Phil, could have been a good career. He probably made enough money even in his Blackburn days to see him through his life a very rich man, so the whole "stole a living" suff doesn't land. I'm sure he'd trade most of it in to have had a relatively injury free career.

posted on 16/5/23

Stealing a living but I can't imagine his injuries are his fault and he didn't force United to extend his contract.

I watched a YouTube video a while back where a doctor went into detail about Jones' knees and it sounds pretty horrible. The man will probably be in pain for the rest of his life and struggle to walk on them most days normally.

He gave us some great facial expressions during his time at least.

Also, didn't he turn down a loan move to Bordeaux a few years back because he said his family are settled. I mean most people would probably do the same but probably the choice of a man who didn't care much about his career at that point.

Think of the spin he could put on his CV.

Man Utd Centre Back 2011-2023 (12 years)
England Centre back 2011-2018 (7 years)

Achievements: PL winner, FA Cup winner, Europa League winner, Charity Shield winner

Phil is an England international centre back with 12 years' experience at the highest level of world football at Man Utd and England.

During his time at Man Utd he conceded the fewest goals of any centre back in the world over the same period.

Phil went 3 consecutive years without getting injured during a match.

During his illustrious career, Phil has partnered world class centre backs such as Vidic, Ferdinand, Varane, £85m Maguire, among others.

Phil has worked under the tenure-ship of some of the world's greatest ever managers including Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Louis Van Gaal, amongst other.

Despite being in the game for 14 years, Phil has very low mileage on the clock for a model of this age and would suit a club looking for a reliable run around.

Not much point in moving your family out of Manchester when the likelihood that he would have played many games is pretty low. Unless it was before his injuries got super bad, but then I imagine being a squad player for United would be preferable

It's even more impressive when you remember that he goes down injured three or four times a game.
