I think Rashers has eight assists in all comps, Ji.
Your second part is bang on though; he’s done much to distract and occupy opposition defenders, which has helped make space for others, and his linkup play has generally been better than our other wingers and forwards (maybe barring Martial).
Interestingly, if we look at chance creation/90 mins, our second most prolific quality chance creator this season (after Bruno) is…
…the much maligned Jadon Sancho.
I think that probably tells you as much about how direct Rashford has been, and how poor the final product of the likes of Antony and Weghorst has been.

Fair but it’s difficult to say that a player who has won 4 CL’s and a WC and is still at least close to his peak levels has deficiencies which have could negatively affect the team.
De Gea makes some spectacular saves still but overall he’s no longer a great shot stopper.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Real Madrid during Varane's time and certainly France in their WC win weren't as dependent as this United team at being able to play through a high press. We're not very good at it for a variety of reasons (the goalkeeper, DM and AWB aren't great at dealing with pressure and passing their way through the lines) and we also lack quality in other areas which mean going long isn't a massively superior game plan either. So Varane's shortcomings on the ball weren't an issue in a side where you had incredible technical ability from Modric and Kroos to pick up the ball and play their way up the pitch, and it wouldn't be an issue if we had a similarly press resistant midfield and competent keeper. Hopefully next season we'll see progress on those fronts. But as it stands, it exacerbates our weaknesses.
"I generally don’t just go for the top goal scorer like most fans do with these but it is hard to look past the fact that we would be somewhere close to Chelsea without his goals."
That surely goes both ways though, whilst our total goals conceded doesn't look great on paper, 16 of those conceded came in 3 games. But for the collapses against Brentford, City & Liverpool, we'd have the best record in the league.

I can see why many are choosing Rashford but his season can really be split into 3 parts.
Before the WC he was decent where he scored 9 in 19, just after the WC he was excellent and scored 16 in 17 and now has 4 in his last 17 where he has often been average/poor.
Some say I’ve an agenda or whatever which is BS but I do think it’s a fair comment to say it he’s not scoring he rarely ever plays well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you can also add that his goals have mostly come from the CF position, even games he started on the wing, his goals later on have almost always been from up front.
This is the problem with Rashford though, he goes through good and bad spells (like a lot of players), but I don't think we can go into next season with him expected to be our talisman.
It's extremely difficult to choose just one to be honest
Bruno - Quite an average season from him, which considering he's still got a goal/assist every other game is pretty insane. Especially when you consider we've only had 2 pens all season. He's not had many in the way of poor games, and even in those where he's not been excellent, he's generally still been 1 of our top players. 5th in that list.
Case - Excellent for most of the season, despite the 2 red cards. Literally transformed us from the team that lost 4-0 to Brentford in to a top 4 challenging team. Would be higher, but he's had quite a poor run in the last few games, lots of clumsy challenges and misplaced passes (might just be recency bias though!). Definitely need someone who can share the burden with him as he's not exactly a spring chicken. 4th
Martinez - Proved a hell of a lot of doubters wrong, one of the signings of the season in my opinion. Mentally he reminds me of Vidic, first time we've had a die hard defender in a long time. Love the guy, and hope the injury clears up well, we're going to need him fit next season for sure.
Rashford was a revelation, especially post world cup. seems like no one else in our squad can score at the moment. For a good while, everything he touched turned to gold, not much else to say about it really! IMO, he's number 2 this season though.
Shaw - When you see the difference in quality between Malacia and Shaw, it's night and day. He goes under the radar quite a lot, but quietly he's one of our most important players, at least in my opinion. Who knew he could play as a proper CB? When he's not at LB, we have zero attacking threat from that side, he's a huge miss when he doesn't play. At least for now, the 'Shaw replacement buff' might wear off in the summer and we might need to buy a new Telles/Malacia to give him a kick up the ars again.
Mentions -
Garnacho - what a talent we have on our hands. Shame about the hair.
DDG - Mental that he's won the golden glove (who'd have predicted that after the 2nd game). He's had a couple of big errors and there are certainly parts of his game that are lacking, but overall he's been basically as solid as usual

VC, if you look at the match threads, it seems like it is impossible for someone to just be having an OK game. I reckon if someone were to go back through, every single player against Wolves should have been sold, except for Garnacho probably.
People on here, especially during the game, only seem to be able to think in black and white. There is no nuance, therefore Sancho is sheite, waste of money, shouldn't ever play, etc.

Doubt it. Sancho doesn’t create chances of high quality. I bet the vast majority of his chances created are square balls to players shooting from outside of the box.
No clear nominee for me. I don’t think there’s been a single standout player.
Rashford - easy choice due to his numbers and this is who I would pick if I had a gun to my head.
Varane - missed too many games but has provided his mop-up style extremely well. The amount of crucial headed clearances and interceptions is there for all to see
Martinez - good passing, aggressive defending and some much needed passion / attitude provided to the squad. This type of behaviour is infectious
Casemiro - similar to the two above. Not been perfect but his influence in the middle of the park has been very good. We’ve been starved in this position for years now so we shouldn’t be getting excited by this, this should be the standard
Bruno - yet again creating the most, works very hard but hasn’t quite hit the heights he has previously.
Shaw - has had an excellent season, I think it’s fair to say that when he first got pushed in to LCB most of us feared the worst as his defensive positioning historically hasn’t been good but without Maguire he has done very, very well there and when at LB was linking up well down the left and was often a threat.
Rashford surely to win it?

I dunno. Of our regular starters (so excluding Garnacho!) he’s only behind Bruno and Eriksen in xAG/90 mins (0.17) in the league.
It doesn’t say much, especially as per 90 stats are misleading. His expected assists in the prem are 2.53 and he has 2 assists. He’s only created 2 big chances. The chances created and per 90 stats are misleading, especially as a pass that leads to a shot counts as a chance created. As I said the majority of those will be square passes for low quality chances, because I’ve watched him do that all season. The two big chances created supports my argument about the lack of high quality chance creation. Just for context, Bruno has created 31 big chances and has 8 assists.
So what you're saying there is that Sancho's big chances are far better quality (100% conversion) than Bruno's (around 26% conversion).

Where are the big chance stats from?
I looked on sofascore but double checked them on the premier league website. I believe those stats come from opta so, whilst the methodology is imperfect, they at least seem to track well over multiple sights as opta are the official statisticians of the prem. Xg is a bit more difficult because different sites use different models, so I’ve seen inconsistencies.
For example, sofascore has KDB as having an xA of 13.94 but understat has it at 16.27. So I’m always unsure which are the most accurate.

Rashford will win it. The goals always cover everything else. It is the English way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You say that like it's all he has offered though... He's assisted in double figures and caused absolute chaos to opposition teams in general.
Recency bias really is dreadful on this site.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think Rashers has eight assists in all comps, Ji.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This does not surprise me actually. Yes Sancho has not set the world alight since coming here but he certainly isn’t as poor as some of our posters say.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Like Bruno, he’d likely have racked up a tidy number of assists this season if we had a semi-competent and mobile number nine available all season.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. This is why you don’t see me on the match thread during the game apart from half time every now and then.
I do read back through them sometimes for comedy value.

As an aside, AWB has been far, far improved this season. Hopefully he can learn how to cross a bit better, but he's been pretty good. Turns out, getting benched every now and then is what some of these guys needed.

AWBissaka is low-key the best defender this season. It's completely unexpected but wonderful to me.
