More similar to PEH, very suited to liverpools profile of a midfielder
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To be honest I think MacAllister could play the 5,6 or 8 role. Great signing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A 5? Centerback?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilst 5 is traditionally a CB. Many DMF now hold a no5. Busquets and Fernandinho being examples.
5 being the DMF
6 being the more b2b
8 being the creative more advanced
Football has evolved since the 80’s and early 90s or so I thought. Didn’t think it needed explaining.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tbf everything I read/hear uses 6 as shorthand for the defensive mid, 8 for the box-to-box or attacking central mid and 10 for a pure attacking mid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe the case and obviously there is overlaps within certain players, but considering the 3 distinguished MF types:
No.5
Busquets
Partey
Fernandinho
Casemiro
No.6
Kimmich
Verratti
Thiago
Koke
Xavi
No.8
Kross
Gundogan
Bruno
Odegaard
Iniesta
So you get the jist. 5,6 & 8 or 6,8 &10. The 10 jersey nowadays tends to be taken by forwards with the evolution of tactics and the traditional no10 role almost being a thing of the past - in the Ozil like position. Like I said I didn’t think it needed explaining. And MacAllister is harder than most MFs to place specifically in any of these roles. He can play different roles in MF imo.

It is weird how much this is done now. When I was a kid there were no squad numbers (except maybe in World Cups), so it was always 1-11. And I never heard anyone say "he's a number 8" or "he's better in the number 10 role" or "we need a proper number 6 in there".
Now people say it all the time, even though at United, for instance, our number 6 wears number 18, the player who wears number 8 is probably more of a number 10 and the guy who wears number 10 can play anywhere across the front line - except number 10.

I tended to think of 5 and 6 as CBs and 4 and 8 as CMs when I was a kid. Then again, Ferguson's United had Bruce and Pallister (4 and 6) as CBs long before squad numbers came in, so number 5 was often a utility player or even a flying winger like Sharpe or Kanchelskis. Obviously it became Sharpe's squad number.

Yeah, it's usually been 4 in England, 5 in South America and 6 basically everywhere else.
On a similar note, 3 is usually LB... but it's RCB in Brazil and often Spain, and in Holland the LB number is 5 while the LB for Brazil wears 6.
It doesn't matter, just thought Belfast's logic was a bit odd considering that he gave examples of completely different players for each position just because they had the same number on their back (Thiago and Kimmich? Kross and Bruno?).
Also, Fernandinho wore 25 for City and Casemiro was 14 at Real Madrid and 18 at United, so... They only wore 5 when starting for Brazil.
Either way it's just a bunch of false equivalences. And I'm being facetious because let's face it, we all knew what he meant.

5 being the DMF
6 being the more b2b
8 being the creative more advanced
Football has evolved since the 80’s and early 90s or so I thought. Didn’t think it needed explaining.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tbf everything I read/hear uses 6 as shorthand for the defensive mid, 8 for the box-to-box or attacking central mid and 10 for a pure attacking mid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe the case and obviously there is overlaps within certain players, but considering the 3 distinguished MF types:
No.5
Busquets
Partey
Fernandinho
Casemiro
No.6
Kimmich
Verratti
Thiago
Koke
Xavi
No.8
Kross
Gundogan
Bruno
Odegaard
Iniesta
So you get the jist. 5,6 & 8 or 6,8 &10. The 10 jersey nowadays tends to be taken by forwards with the evolution of tactics and the traditional no10 role almost being a thing of the past - in the Ozil like position. Like I said I didn’t think it needed explaining. And MacAllister is harder than most MFs to place specifically in any of these roles. He can play different roles in MF imo.

Each footballing nation has its own tradition with shirt numbering, hence why you may see a number 2 being a right-back in one country or a CB in another.
However, I am absolutely not having us calling a DM a #5. I also wouldn't call a creative midfielder a #23 despite there being instances of that.
9 10
11 6 8 7
3 5 6 2
1
----------------------------------------------------------------------
you got two 6s and no 4

I'm not very good at thinking

There was a good article someone (I think Michael Cox?) did on the history of shirt numbering and how it differs from nation to nation.
I think traditionally the defensive midfielder in English football used to be a 4?

yeah some old people still get aggy about you calling the DM a 6, think it's a load of European nonsense

Yeah the implication of my original post was MacAllister could play the more defensive role in midfield. The box to box type role. Or even the more advanced creative role.

Brazil seem to see 5 as a DM number (Fernandinho, Casemiro etc). I'd never thought to distinguish between a number 5 and a number 6 though as DMs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s because Fabinho is No3 for the pool Which is rare in itself.

Only as long as he's playing in Ghana, Chile or Afghanistan
