I don't know what can be done but it's pretty disgusting at how high rent prices are everywhere.
I'm in the Midlands and you're talking £750+ to rent anywhere that's not a sh!thole. When you then factor in all the other costs like electric bills and council tax then you basically need to be on £30k just to survive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It can be €2000 a month in Dublin for a property and that’s nothing special
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s disappointing as I had planned to possibly spend my later years in Ireland living a nice cheap life. Is it much better on the west coast? Galway etc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be less mate although not by a huge amount. It would be far better to buy a property outright there. Would cost way less than Dublin
Is this where our 90s metal bar will be located?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely. Near to the cliffs of Moher and we can sell hot pies with exotic ingredients to dumb American tourists
Myself and the missus are paying almost €1700 per month to rent a one bed apartment. We've served our notice and I reckon they will get 2k per month for it now.
Crazy money.

By reducing the number of kids these people have, you are maybe freeing up one bedroom per family for somoeone else. If you target the real problem, the people owning multiple properties (boomers) then by eliminating one boomer instead of a kid then you free up multiple residences.
The solution is therefore to euthanise all boomers with more than one property. Or are you too soft to agree? It is a much more effective solution in tackling the problem than your pathetic effort.
We need more babies not less, so maybe discouraging people from having them isn't such a bright idea.
There needs to be mass council house building with no opportunity to buy them.

Joking aside fair play for not raising the rent mate. 450 a month would not get a room in Dublin
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah. It's much cheaper here of course. Dublin prices seem crazy!
I don't need to raise the rent though as it more than covers the mortgage. I'd have sold it but got no offers for it back in 2016/17. I would now though probably but it'd be unfair evicting a good tenant who has made a good life for herself back in her home town

This is where I will agree with RDD though.
We (humans, the planet) do not need more babies... Capitalism does to keep this smokescreen up.
I’d also like to see a way where if you rent for a couple of years that should be enough to convince a bank to purchase a property with a mortgage equal to what the rent paid was. Or something perhaps better than that based on rental records rather than an unattainably high deposit unless you get an inheritance payout.

Maybe in mainland Europe but not sure about anywhere else. I have friends in the UK, US, Canada, Australia who all pay obscene amouts for rent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely. Many places in the Anglosphere had rent control and got rid of them during the waves of economic liberalisation unleashed by Thatcher and Reagan. I'd re-state it: there's a correlation between rent control and cities being liveable places with vibrant communities.

I'm not discouraging people from having babies. Just preparing them for the fact that they are and will be responsible for housing them.
Radical, I know.
The government fecked up with the new tax rules on rentals. It isn’t landlord going to be be it, it’ll be the remnants.
Not helped at all by the BoE continually rising rates after “predictions” it would have settled and started flatline 3 months ago. Every other month there’s another new reason to protect the banks profits, energy wholesale prices, then food, now it’s salary increases.
Not sure how people are supposed to afford a home to be honest. Unless you’ve got good parents providing you a good financial education from your teenage years, you’ll struggle to get a house before 25-30.

I don't know what can be done but it's pretty disgusting at how high rent prices are everywhere.
I'm in the Midlands and you're talking £750+ to rent anywhere that's not a sh!thole. When you then factor in all the other costs like electric bills and council tax then you basically need to be on £30k just to survive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It can be €2000 a month in Dublin for a property and that’s nothing special
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s disappointing as I had planned to possibly spend my later years in Ireland living a nice cheap life. Is it much better on the west coast? Galway etc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be less mate although not by a huge amount. It would be far better to buy a property outright there. Would cost way less than Dublin
Is this where our 90s metal bar will be located?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely. Near to the cliffs of Moher and we can sell hot pies with exotic ingredients to dumb American tourists

"Social housing should therefore only be available to someone for a max period of 5 years. That should be enough time for most to get themselves in a position to buy or private rent."
Not remotely possible in any way, if after the 5yrs they weren't in a position to buy or rent private what do we do with them? where would they go?
--------
A tower block for a max of 2 years. Then, if after 7 years, if you can't provide a home for your kids, they should be removed from you.
This would soon see people questioning if they can afford baby number 3 or 4.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You really are a facking bellēnd aren't you?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Somebody tells me this guy has been in a social housing for 4.5 years 😄
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hilarious.
But no, as it happens I just have a brain and a touch of empathy
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Where is your empathy and solutions for who the thousands of people squeezed our of the housing market?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, cos the solution is to take kids away from their parents.

My suggestion might be uncomfortable to some of the softer types, but desperate times call for deperate measures. Genuine consequences are needed.
I note
----------------------------------------------------------------------
By reducing the number of kids these people have, you are maybe freeing up one bedroom per family for somoeone else.

Myself and the missus are paying almost €1700 per month to rent a one bed apartment. We've served our notice and I reckon they will get 2k per month for it now.
Crazy money.

Nuts mate absolutely nuts.
I bought in 2005. 5 years left to pay the bloodsuckers
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not too bad pal, only 30 years left for me

Russian

It’s insane here in Sydney. Getting a two bed apartment that looks half decent is at least the equivalent of £300 per week.
