It's certainly a major talking point but it's the safety first approach that Stokes doesn't take in his decision making. He'd rather win/lose/draw in that order.

Scoreboard pressure is the way we'd all do it but Stokes is wired differently and that's why he is the successful cricketer he is.

Short ball barrages, charging down the wicket, early declarations etc are things I don't agree with but they seem to largely work out in the end.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And t f if we has Archer or Wood plus a half decent spinner iwould fancy us to win this match, but we don't and our attack just looks meh in these conditions on this pitch......unless Stokes now has a bionic knee and can put some balls into the Aussies throats

We haven't really seen much of our attack on this pitch. Once the lacquer comes on off, they might get it to move around a bit and we've not even seen Anderson, Moeen or Root have a bowl. Think it's too early to know for sure and the pitch could just flatten out more for all we know.

Sadly as English cricket fans, we always think we've got too few and always think the Aussies will get too much.

Fackin Spurs fans... seriously - no disrespect meant in general but fack me you have some fackin oxegen thieves on here

Sandy is a knobwart..ans craptor is just filth
----------------------------------------------------------------------

A good days cricket to discuss and all they can do in derail the thread with wind ups and, in craptor’s case, personal insults.

It’s hard to believe that one teams fanbase could include such a group of idiots as Aceloe, StrikeMug Muppet, Billy the Skid, MoronGreaves, Onslow, Sandy and the icing on the cake, craptor.

I’m thinking of doing a Spursof the year for 2023!! 😂😂

Actually had a spot of rain this morning at home...the garden welcomed it

Ridiculous declaration, This bazball needs putting in check, Stokes shock was pathetic, but he seems immune to criticism, if the Aussies take a lead, they'll win this test... He'll come out & say we aren't changing, well it's not all about you Stokes.. It's about England regaining the Ashes...

Shot, not shock... Why can't we edit?

Love the meltdowns people have throughout a test.

I think the big story yesterday was that the touted England destroyer Scottie Boland is averaging 81 at an economy rate of 6.

I'm not sure he's immune to criticism and he knows he will be questioned on this but he is very blunt and clear in his response to how we will play. Result first either way and take the draw off the table. Personally I don't mind a backs to the wall draw every now and then as they can be unbelievable games sometimes. One of the most legendary games in the last 30 years was the draw in Cardiff in 09 due to the theatre of it all.

Yeah I'll take the hit on that one but don't laud it up top early mate, I'd rather be wrong throughout the series!

Yeah he'll have better days. I think they made a mistake picking him over Starc for this one though. He moves it less than all the other bowlers and isn't the quickest. On a flat wicket with defensive fields, it was quite easy to work him round the ground.

As well as it being overcast today, it's probably also worth noting that the pitch was turning yesterday. Although people don't rate Moeen, on thing he is good at is turning the ball as he gets decent revolutions on the ball for a finger spinner. The Aussies do have a lot of left handers for him to turn the ball away from, which is why I think they turned to him.

If they can take eight on a roasd...we should be able to turn it on overcast conditions

although two of Lyons wickets were gifts

shame this pitch is so slow. But its very humid today.. Lets hope Jimmy bowls them out with his swing..and the ball carries to slip.

...does he?

Can't say I've ever had him down as a big turner of the ball. Possibly because his flight is so inconsistent that it often negates whatever spin he might manage.

In his last tour of Sri Lanka, he turned the ball the most of any finger spinner in the series. He also averages 34 with the ball in tests in the UK, which is similar to Nathan Lyon.

Ali's record is terrible overseas, but not overly bad for the UK. Which is unusual for a spinner.

Unreal how often the weather turns up to help England pacers.

I think Mo does get plenty of revs so he can get decent turn but his consistency is an issue which is why he can get milked quite easily and does usually offer up a 4 ball most overs.

Can he bowl 20+ overs today as he will have to.

Yes, I was expecting another belting hot day, so scrap that 320 for 4 prediction unless conditions improve
