Trent Last Night

I’ve mentioned this before on the Trannie thraad, he has the ability to play a KDB type role for us.

Trent in inverted is a cheat code. He should continue in that role for me. Especially when or if we improve our midfield.

Don’t know why he plays right back - he can’t defend. Something went wrong early in his career - he’s a midfielder all day for me

You can see why we didn't get Bellingham, trent can do what he does and we have £100M.

People forget how young TAA is as well, can see him being like pirlo, modric etc in mf ...he is so so talented.

England are lucky, TAA and Bellingham in my....WOW!

I got smashed to pieces when I suggested Trent as a midfielder start of last season for Liverpool….understood the reasoning as he had just come off a season playing very well at right back but he had good cover defensively that season and his floors as a defender have always been there

Think he is a very classy player and would be great in a ‘quarter back’ type role

One of my favourite players to watch when he is on it

Klopp already did what Pep did with Stones in regards to Trent. Southgate didn't find something new in regards to this. What Southgate did was make him the midfield playmaker higher up the pitch, which we know he has the ability to do. However it was against Malta, the perfect game to try it. Club managers don't really have the luxury of trying things, outside of pre season.

This is nothing new from Southgate and with the abundance of right backs he has available, it's only a surprise this hasn't happened sooner, considering the lack of midfield quality, especially in terms of creativity.

Personally for Liverpool I'd continue with him in the role Klopp created for him, it works excellently, giving you an extra midfielder when in possession and one difficult to pick up, giving him time and space for his world class passing range.

Whilst it didn't work at the beginning of the season and was leaving the defence exposed and causing Trent to get pelters with it being abandoned part way through, the latter part of the season Klopp had him sitting next to Fabinho more often, instead of what you would normally consider inverted, just inside the right back position, like Guardiola did with Stones. With Guardiola Stones is an extra body in there when in possession, good defensively and keeps it simple when on the ball to allow others to get forward. With Trent it's much more dangerous as he can pick players out from anywhere.

Klopp now has the chance during preseason to define this further, to get Trent on the ball more and more importantly to have the team set up to defend when he's not back 'into position' at right back when the opposition counter.

Konate has filled in very well when Trent’s in midfield but the plan falls down a bit when he’s out injured. Rumour is we are looking at Van de Ven at Wolfsburg who has pace to burn in defence, I would think we would fit in very well if that comes off.

Walker would be perfect for this role and it looks like Guardiola doesn't fancy him in the new system, however they'd never sell to us and he's getting on a bit. Shame as it would also give us the option to play Trent in midfield, playing with a back four.

I'm sure the defenders hate the system as it leaves them exposed a lot and always in panic to get across. It also leaves the left back space empty since Konate comes across to right back, VVD to right centre back and Robertson to left centre back. I'm sure the idea is that Fabinho gets back in there but when it's a quick counter and he's just been involved in a midfield duel, it's hard to expect him to get back there. I guess it's weighing up the positives against the negatives which has usually worked well for Klopp systems.

True but he did put some very good displays at the end of the season playing in a midfield role …..or I thought that’s where he was playing

Him and Macallister could be a good midfield pairing next season and if Fabinho rediscovers his mojo it’s a very strong midfield

Have a feeling nunez could be more consistent next year too

Liverpool are going to be a different beast next season along with Chelsea …..take city out the equation and I reckon the other 3 champions league places are going to be a close thing with Arsenal, United , Chelsea and Liverpool….Wouldn’t want to call who misses out

posted on 17/6/23

Macallister was a superb signing for pool, and Trent away from his liability position at RB will allow him to concentrate on what he’s actually good at, so assuming they’ve got a decent DM anchoring the midfield then they could be right up there.

Well as Neville said he basically single handidly revolutionised the RB spot. Was hands down the best RB in the world for many many years, 4 or 5? So this not a rb cant play rb thing is bollox. That said if hes playing RB he clearly needs a very well oiled system to cover his flaws.

Teams tried targeting him for a long time but the team was too good it didnt really matter, ofc hes not the best defensively but he can defend too and has had plenty of solid defensive displays along the way.

When the team droppped off and Trent had dips in form too, is when he really started getting exposed but it was still imo blown over the top compared to other defenders getting away with worse Trent was always picked out for every minor thing he did wrong and its been a running thing since.

I think be interesting to continue with what we was doing with Trent at the end of this season from RB. We need a lcb really though, especially since VVD is done. And we need some physicality in mf with legs.
