I've always been an advocate for multi-ball extra time.

You can get creative with different variations of multi-ball, and only inform the teams at kick-off what the rules will be. E.g. "today we're playing with three balls" or "we're starting with 11 balls; whenever a goal is scored, that ball is 'retired' and the game doesn't end until all the balls have been scored; off you go... oh, I forgot to say that each successive goal scored is valued as double the previous one."

The only thing about penalties that needs looking at it is the blatant gamesmanship from the keepers. No need for the unsporting conduct. Saw it in pretty much every shootout in this seasons playoffs.

At least the World Cup was free of such skullduggery.

The only thing I would change is alternate who takes the next penalty first, so if everyone is successful, each team is feeling the pressure of having to score to stay in it.

They did this a few years back. First team went, then the second team took two, then the first team took two.. I can't remember which league/competition but it obviously wasn't popular.

So if there's 11 balls you can score the first 7 or 8 balls but still lose because the opponent scored the final 2 or 3?

It's a joke. You always win by scoring the last ball, as it's always worth more than all the rest put together.

G/PT*
1
2 (1)
4 (3)
8 (7)
16 (15)
32 (31)
64 (63)
etc.

*V= Value of goal
PT=Previous total
