I think Declan rice is an excellent player that will have a transformative effect on the team similar to van dijk and Allison.

If that happens then fair enough.

Your team is good enough or it's not. Never understood the concept of "statement of intent". I'm much more interested in us improving the quality and depth of the squad than making any statements. And I feel like £170m should buy you more than Rice and Havertz. That amount, even in this crazy market, should be able to buy you quality players in those positions AND a striker.

It would have bought them more if they hadn’t paid over double what rice should be worth. Still, I think arsenal will be in the mix at the top this season, they massively overpaid but the additions should help.

Thing with Rice, is that I don't think we could have really got anyone who would be a better fit for us in such an important position, so in that sense he will be worth the money. When you have other teams inflating the market too, then West Ham are fully entitled to point to those deals and ask for the amount they did.

I wanted us to back out of the deal when West Ham were turning down an £80m bid for Rice, but saying he's worth less than half what we paid for him is hyperbolic in a market where Man U bought 30-year-old Casemiro for £70m and Chelsea bought an Argentine CM than had spent just half a season in Europe for £106m. Let's not exaggerate here.

This isn’t really an apt comparison anyway because Liverpool weren’t transformed by them. They had numerous things click into place.

By comparison, Arsenal had that this season for the most part. But now it looks like they’re completely changing the midfield. So it remains to be seen if things kick on for Arsenal, especially as there’s quite a lot of young players in the team that may not continue to progress.

Casemiro
Enzo
Rice

Can anyone point out the odd one out?

They're entitled to ask for a billion dollars. We don't have to submit to their demands. Rice had a year left on his contract and was clearly keen on leaving, West Ham's owners said he was "99%" certain to leave (no chance they'd allow a player of such value leave on a free), and while other clubs flirted with Rice, we were clearly in the driving seat. We had more leverage than we let on and allowed ourselves get shafted by West Ham.

Rice effectively had two years as West Ham had a club option to extend his contract for a year.

We were preferred, but if we didn't stump up the money he probably would have gone to City

There is still a possibility that if we allow Partey leave, we'd have actually weakened our midfield by swapping Xhaka and Partey for Rice and Havertz. Too many people here seem far too comfortable just letting two first team regulars leave as if we were releasing Elneny.

I suspect it will be. I’ve never rated Xhaka that highly, but he was so important to Arsenal and performed at a very high level. And unlike Havertz, he’s actually a midfielder.

Also took Partey and Xhaka a good few years playing together to really start dominating midfields. Tough ask for Rice and Havertz to walk in and do that straight away, let alone transforming Arsenal to a higher level.

I'd have been fine with Rice replacing either Xhaka or Partey. For me, he's better than both. It's losing Xhaka AND Partey that is worrying. Since Xhaka has left, we should try to keep Partey - except any of the Saudi moneybags offers us big money for Partey that we can immediately reinvest in that position, but no offers are incoming.

Anyways, still looking forward to seeing what da actual fack Arteta intends to do with Havertz. Because that is a signing that still makes no sense to me, but I'd be happy to have egg on my face when he's tearing it up.

Yeah I’d agree with that.

Man City were literally the only other club to bid for him, don’t try to include others there.

Arteta's latest words indicate partey will stay. Agree things change in a big way if he leaves.

If Partey leaves then we've moved backwards a bit, if he stays then we've got backup for Partey and two players who can offer something different as options in the Xhaka role. I know Xhaka was big for us last year, but I see that as quite a big improvement.

He'll be good for us...have faith...until he isn't, but for now we have to give him a proper chance in Arsenal colours

Arsenal should bid for Harry Kane.
He is the 25 - 30 goal a season striker that would strengthen us even further.
There would be Sol style outrage at Spurs but Levy woudnt care if the price was right. Some of the Arsenal players he already plays alongside with England.
Kane would be back where it all started for him.
Cant see it happening but it would be lit
