You should make this a series but use each season since Fergie retired to make it more interesting.

If I remember I might just do that. Slim picking though!

Could be some interesting debates, especially if you take into account the form of the season as well.

String, what I meant was asking what players you’d take from say Van Gaal’, Jose or Ole’s teams on any given season. Not gonna mention Moyes. Though a crocked RVP and Danny Welbeck would be of more use than the current Anthony Martial.

Oh oof!!

Well, that’s a whole different ball game.

Has to be RVN. Although there's probably six or seven that you could plonk in to improve the first XI.

I’m not sure there is, you know.

I’d probably only take Giggs, Scholes, Rio and RVN. neville was a better right back than what we have but even he’ll be the first to admit he’d struggle playing today. Right wing is a toss up of unreliability because Ronaldo was on the bench half the time with Darren Fletcher actually starting more games than him.

It’s why it makes me laugh when people blame Ruud for us not winning the title because of his style. The squad was crap compared to Arsenal and Chelsea’s.

I should pick Ruud but no, Scholes.

I agree, do a series but maybe starting since Fergie took over?! We’ve got a long whole until the proper games start.

Think it’d be more fun debating teams that weren’t very successful. So Fergie pre premier league and United post Fergie.

My memory may be hazy but I'd go with:

Ruud
Scholes
Giggs
Ferdinand
Brown (at RB)
O'Shea (at RB)

Ronaldo (that version even better than current Antony IMO)

Ruud wasn't to blame for those fallow years of course and I guess he's a bit unlucky that when he left Ronaldo and Rooney really flourished. Saha was perhaps a better fit with them, as he wasn't as 'selfish' as Ruud, but I've no doubt had he stayed he'd have been fine with CR and WR. We also lacked a quality keeper most of the time we had Ruud. Ironically one of those keepers, Barthez, would probably do a lot better for us now and De Gea would have been better for us back then!
Saha (the fit version)

But Brown and Rio hardly played, and Brown wasn’t playing right back that season. O’Shea was usually left back and Neville was right back. With Phil Neville filling in all over the place. I think all three of those would struggle playing full back in this team because of the demands today.

Ronaldo was really flakey and played fewer games than Darren Fletcher that season. Antony isn’t very good but I don’t think it’s that clear cut based on what Ronaldo and Fletcher were doing that season and what we’d want from our right winger in this team.

Ruud, Scholes and Giggs are no brainers. But based on their level that season, and availability, it’s only Rio and maybe Ronaldo on the basis of them contributed, albeit not nailed on - Rio had a ban so it changes the argument somewhat.

That team was obviously managed by Fergie and seasoned performers, but in the context of the team we have now I think many would struggle.

To contrast that, if you had to choose players from this team for Fergie’s team I’d probably give different answers.

Yeah maybe I've made the mistake of judging them by their overall careers at Utd rather than that season. By overall careers though I'd take all of them!

I do think Neville underplays himself a bit though going back a few posts. He was up and down that flank supporting his wide player without the protection of a third midfielder usually.

Yeah that is true. I think it’s probably because he wasn’t the most athletic or technically gifted, which is why he thinks he’d struggle. But then he had and intelligence and determination that made up for those flaws.
