Considering we have our finger in every pie we have always done well as a nation, sports wise.

Which British teams are we talking about here?

This is mainly an English list but I'll just put it in there that my country are world champions at Darts!

Death, taxes and England mens not winning a major honor

who cares about other sports.

minority sports where only a few of the counties participate don't really count anyway.

use the world championships and Olympics to judge.

What the F is a minority sport? To the people participating it is their life.

I worry about Rugby... since the rule changes to takling every match seems to be decided by who gets the least red and yellow cards.

Dying a slow death I fear no wonder clubs are struggling financially

Best men's team? Maybe in 4 years time!
---------------------------------------------------
I reckon sooner than that. We have already demonstrated that we are one of the best teams in League A in the nations league by comfortably beating Spain. We have also won all of our Euros qualifying games, beating Haaland and Oodegard away from home in the process. There currently isn't another team in the world as good as us at the moment and things only seem to be getting better. Definitely think it will be sooner than 4 years.

Agree Scott. But the acid test comes at the World Cup. So I correct myself because we are talking 3 years time!

Per capita I think we (Australia) are the best in the world sports wise.

Best cricket test side
Best rugby league nation
Best AFL nation
Came 6th in the Olympic medal table
4th best snooker player
Best pound for pound UFC fighter
We also have Wolverine and Thor

Only an Australian could boast about being best at Australian football

I'd actually have to disagree with you there. The highest level of international football these days is league A in the nations league. It is where the very best teams play eachother. At the world cup you get through a group playing Panama and Iran. Then you can play some nonsense like Ghana/Colombia/Sweden in the knock outs and suddenly you're in a semi final without facing anyone decent. In League A, all teams are world class. There are no easy games.

Some farmers from Morocco made the semis of the world cup FFS. They'd be about league C in the nations league.

F1 we're doing pretty well, Mclaren and Aston are in there doing ok, Mclaren especially. 3 drivers all at top teams with Norris a potential Red Bull target.

I clearly didn't understand how divided we are when it comes to sport. I support the Welsh, N Irish and Scottish in all sports. Maybe the anti English is more prevalent than I thought <hmm>

Yeah but no one cares about cars going round in a circle for 3 hours. You can get that for free if you pitch up a chair beside your local roundabout

Please let me know which part of that is anti-English?

I'm certainly not anti-English but it is an annoyance of mine how Britain and England are so interchangeable. We even play England in the rugby tomorrow (two mediocre teams really!) so we want clarity in the OP!

Baz - if that's what's being discussed then yes. Barry would probably state Scotland are the best football team on the British Isles anyway!

For such a small country that spreads ourselves over so many sports (footy, rugby, tennis, cricket, golf and others)

We overachieve at nearly every level.

Considering we invented half the sports we're pretty rubbish at them. I find we're best at the ones where we get to sit down - F1, horse racing and dancing, rowing, cycling. I don't know if that says something about our lazy culture.

As far as the big global team and individual sports we underachieve in most of them.

Rugby - only won 1 World Cup compared to New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.

Cricket - fluked a WC against New Zealand but still behind some of the biggest countries.

Tennis - Our record of major wins in recent years is pretty abysmal considering we hold one of the slams. Apart from Murray, our women and men tend to be hyped up journeymen/women that don't deliver success.

Football - Don't need to talk about how much our men have underachieved on an international level. It's embarrassing. Maybe turning a corner with our youth levels finding success? Don't tend to produce enough world class players or managers but perhaps again there are signs of this changing, as far as players go anyway.

Olympics - Been excellent the last few Olympics and turned it around from our often average to shocking performances (one gold in 1996).
