I would like Sancho to start the next game instead of Garnacho, in a false 9 position.

It would add an extra body into midfield and let Bruno and Mount play slightly deeper to help Casemiro. Then you can have Rashford and Antony as wide forwards. Not too dissimilar to Real Madrid’s current set up.

That's what I'd do, and I think ETH will be tempted to too.

"We've signed 3 players but our squad feels thinner, and more unbalanced, than ever."

Think you're overreacting a little after 1 game. 1 of those 3 hasn't played yet and we should hopefully be gringing in 2 more players (1 if slabhead doesn't stop being a belllend about a payoff).

Who has left that has made us less balanced?

I see it was the traditional First Game Of The Season Nuclear Meltdown on the live thread last night.

Glad I gave it a miss.

Only two have played, and then on one game, a the goalie was good
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The GK was OK. He was fortunate not to give away a penalty that would probably have cost us 2 points

Fred would have done better Ryan Eriksen last night.

True, but we've also lost a few options (even if we don't rate them) and depth.

We have no decent cover at CF, DM, LB, CB, RW after all we've spent. It's sickening really.

"Who has left that has made us less balanced?"

It isn't just who has left but who has signed. Seems we still have an attack and midfield who would flourish in a counter attacking setup, with a manager who wants to play a possession based system.

We buy a ball playing goalkeeper, but don't have the defence or midfield to play that way.

We buy Mount for a position occupied by Bruno. Maybe they will work together eventually but Mount strikes me as an unnecessary signing when we're on a budget (this isn't an opinion formed yesterday).

As I say, there's a lack of depth and seemingly we're trying to fit square pegs in round holes still.

posted on 15/8/23

Who have we lost that actually gave us any sort of cover though? De Gea has been replaced, as has Weghorst while Fred is likely going to be replaced by Amrabat. Jones, Bailly, Telles and Tuanzebe were never used.

We also have Amad and Mainoo as options when fit.

Our squad clearly isn't finished but it's stupid to claim it's now less balanced and thinner than ever.

Cover at CF is an issue with Martial being a waste of a squad space and what we lose when Rashford has to play there. We're going to have to make do with Rashford, Sancho and probably Martial to cover for Hojlund once he's fit and otherwise wait on that though.

LB we have Malacia, who is as good an option as most PL sides have as backup. We'll have to see how he develops.

RW we have a bunch of options which, again, we'll have to watch develop. People were crying out for Pellistri to get more minutes and Amad to be given a chance a couple of weeks ago.

We knew we had to bring a DM in if Fred left, and it looks like that's in the pipeline. There's also Mainoo when he's fit.

Likewise, if Slabhead does leave, we'll probably need one more, but there aren't many PL sides with better third, fourth and fifth choice options than Lindelof, Slabhead and Evans.

The fitness is a bigger issue than the personnel for me. We very rarely look as if we can run as hard as, or compete physically with, the opposition. This really is unforgiveable at a top club. It makes me worry that there are ongoing, underlying issues about training and preparation that would hinder us whoever we signed.

Yeah I guess we need to see at the end of the window before making judgement.

Think the squad is still bloated with a lot of average players and maybe the numbers are there, but a lot of them aren't good enough.

We're definitely better than we were fitness and pace-wise IMO, and have progressed in this regard pretty steadily since the Mourinho days. Not that we can't improve.

But in terms of physical competition for the ball, my god, we're lacking: being hustled off the ball, failing to compete for headers/letting the ball bounce, failing to commit to 50/50s...

All of Sancho, Eriksen, Antony and Rashford are all way off the standard there. Many others aren't much better.

I was screaming at Eriksen yesterday when he dropped behind a Wolves midfielder to let him win an aerial ball in the middle of the park with five mins to go. I don't give a fack if you don't believe you can win the challenge; you try to win it, or you otherwise try to make life uncomfortable for the opponent. You back in, you get a little dig in at the ribs, you jump late and knock them off balance a little when they're about to connect. There are a bunch of different things you can do to make life more difficult for them without giving away a FK, and in doing so, you might help your team win the ball back.

I was impressed by United last night, some of the best teeth and hair in the division. Antony top of the class, so immaculately well turned-out. A credit to the club.

Garnacho also really impressed with his "silver tips".

These 2 are setting the standard very high. An honourable mention for Martinez as well. Very pretty.

Its no wonder the likes slabhead and McT are wanted gone, they just don't fit in.

I fear our lads will be embarrassed at WHL at the weekend unless Ange sacks the stylist pronto.

I feel you are a little biased against Antony. He wasn't good last night but probably the least worst of the front 4. Certainly better than Rashford & Garnacho.

1 assist all season Process.

You seem to give Rashford a harder time despite 41 g/a.

Very bizarre mate. Antony is just awful. He will never hit those Rashford numbers or even get close.

Its a good option but Levy will never go for it. I was up for getting Firmino from Liverpool when he left them this summer. He would have taken us to a new level. We have a champions league level stadium and players with non-league level dentistry and lock-down DIY hair. It's an embarrassment and as with all things, it's Levy's fault.

The whole eleven was appalling last night. Not a player came out with any credit. OP could be re-written with any player who started last night.

Because cost us 100 million? The financial outlay always matters in just how much their performance really costs us.

The player is either performing or not.

I'd be just as concerned about £0m Marcus Rashford failing to deliver as I would about £50m+ Bruno Fernandes failing to deliver, because they're both key members of the side.

In terms of what is being delivered on the pitch, the player's cost in terms of transfer fee outlay is entirely irrelevant.

I know it was the first game but it was still an eye opening performance.

Getting outrun and overpowered, players not moving, poor decision making, concentration lapses, loose touches, wayward passing and players not being in good positions to receive the ball and to defend transitions.

I'm not one bit convinced by the personnel and structure of our midfield. It'll continue to cause us headaches this season unless we bring in somebody with better defensive positioning and somebody who can retain and move the ball forward under pressure.

Garnacho's still better used as a substitute for now for his impact later on in games.

Sancho was also 73m and has been atrocious. Our front line up is mega bucks of non delivery

Antony needs to improve. No arguments there but Rashford gets far more praise and a puts in plenty of performances like last night every season.

Antony was probably the least worst of our starting front 6 last night.

My only issue with Rashford is that he is overpraised.
