Refs are like the mafia. They decide who wins games and if you have a problem with that then tough and you end up with a fine or ban.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The season is one week old 🤣
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly and they're already making multiple errors.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When have you ever watched a game of football where players/managers/fans all said after the game “yep, the officials got everything right in that game”?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We're not just talking 50/50s here though. We're talking quite blatant penalty decisions.

As has been mentioned a fair bit this morning, why no outcry or frenzy with the Brentford player being wiped out by the spurs keeper at the weekend?

Maybe it doesn’t involve United

Always makes me laugh when fans of the team that have got away with it try and trivialise the situation.

Had that been the City or Liverpool keeper the Utd lot on here would be furious about it.

My advice to them is just accept that you were very lucky and allow rivals to be p1ssed off about it.

That should have also been a pen but I'm guessing that there has been less made of it because Brentford got a very iffy one given earlier in the game.

If that was your keeper you'd be saying it probably should have been given but it really wasn't the worst decision ever.

My advice is to discuss and disagree with the decision but ultimately accept that these things happen in football instead of harping on about bias, Mancunian referees, "assault" etc.

Spurs should have had a pen given against them for exactly the same thing on Sunday, I'm plenty man enough to admit it and am not trying to trivialise it in any way.

My favourite is "we didn't get anything last week so although we were lucky we deserved it". Look out for that old chestnut as the season clicks into gear.

Fair play to John Moss for admitting the error and stepping down the refs from last night.

Hopefully it will encourage all refs not to make a pigs ear of easy decisions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But if two senior officials knew immediately then why not the VAR? I get the ref can miss stuff in the heat and speed of the game. For VAR to not even invite the ref to review and take time to discuss the interpretation amongst the whole team was incredulous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As I've said, it appears to be linked to the "clear and obvious error" wording. The VAR guy can think the ref made an error but not one that was clear and obvious enough to intervene. So if he thinks it's an error but not a howler, he might choose to let the onfield decision stand. It's silly if that's the case, but there you are.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I get it. And had it been blown for I don't think it would be overturned either?

Not sure the guidance in such instances? Probably to back up the on-field ref and avoid review where possible? Clearly VAR got that totally wrong last night.

Pretty sure it would not have been overturned had it been given as a penalty. Yes, I think the idea in such cases is for VAR not to intervene too much. So the guy got it wrong, but probably not because he didn't think it was a mistake, rather that he didn't think it was a clear enough mistake.

Most United fans admit it should have been a pen to Wolves. You are not talking about the Spurs one because nobody else is really (except on here by way of comparison). If the board was swamped with people saying it was the worst decision ever seen and only Spurs would get away with it, you'd be talking about it a lot more.

Don't disagree with either point. Which is why I'm saying it's pure hyperbole when people say it's "the worst decision they've ever seen" and "as blatant a penalty as you can get". They're letting emotion override reason, because Wolves deserved something that a penalty would have probably given them - and then making out that it us UNreasonable to point this out.

I think VAR has actually made it easier for officials to manipulate games - with the :clear and obvious" get out being the worst thing to happen to the rules.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep, I said this when it was first introduced, it was blatantly used as an extra tool to ensure Varpool won their covid title, if the clown on the pitch doesn`t drag them along, then the clown in the studio will.

We all know that Varpool & Penited play with 13 men every week, the officials don`t have the bottle to give decisions against them, hence why they trouser an extra 20 points a season they don`t deserve, courtesy of bent officiating.

I think if a penalty had been awarded against Spurs we couldn't have had many complaints, I thought one was going to be given. But it was nowhere near as clear cut as the Utd one, anyone claiming otherwise is clueless or lying.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The fact that Wolves deserved something from the game and the incident being right at the death have of course made it more of a talking point.

That said however much the incident is or isn't being discussed on a small football forum like this doesn’t alter the fact that sonebody who refs games at Prem level has looked at a goalkeeper missing the ball and clattering an opponent (with the benefit of slow motion and various camera angles) and said nothing to see here.

If there is no improvement in the use of VAR this season them I hope a campaign to scrap it starts to gather momentum because at the moment those operating it are not doing doing their job and it's therefore a waste of time, money and effort.

posted on 15/8/23

It`s game week one and biased / inept officiating has already resulted in a 4 point swing between Spurs & Penited.

A tap on a Brentford players ankle which in no way impeded his action resulted in a ridiculously soft penalty being awarded, and then an outright assault on a Wolves player that belongs on the rugby field being completely ignored.

If the officials were not so biased / useless then Spurs would be 2 points ahead of Penited instead of 2 points behind, and we`ve only played one game.

With var no pen, without var no pen.

I hate var it fixes nothing, though I was quite a fan when liverpools 2nd was ruled out, then not afterwards when they ruled our our 2nd.

I've never been a fan of var fearing the benefits would be outweighed by the negatives. I would gladly see the back of it, but there will always be incorrect calls made, we are human, even Refs.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've always thought that goalkeepers being given the unconditional authority to clatter opponents despite getting nowhere near the ball is one of the most underdiscussed and strangely accepted traits of the game.

Hopefully the fallout from this incident will force refs/VAR to apply the rules in such cases.
