This is just my opinion but here's my explanation.
If you're English it's easy to support the rest of Britain as to all intents and purposes for many there's no difference between the two. Just think of all the "What it means to be British lists" and the majority, if not all, will be English based.
Whereas the rest of the UK countries strive to have their own identity so will rally against what they see as something which just confirms one country's dominion over others.
I'd be much more likely to want England to do well if we were all independent countries.

I have to admit it is a little funny too when some people take offence we don't support them.
I don't know about you in Ireland but here we get our own media asking "Will you now be supporting England?" What is that all about? If I were English I couldn't care less if everyone else supported my country or not!
Considering there is about 100 English people in Sydney for every Australian I bet it is an interesting vibe!
