Trump is the closest you will get to a modern day facist leader.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think Putin might have something to say about that!

While people can argue the semantics of what makes a leader facist, Putin ticks way more boxes than Trump did when he was in power.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The most useful thing isn't a hierarchy of baddies, but to be very clear which are the political forces and agents who exist on that spectrum - and where those tendencies can lead if left unchecked.

Putin authoritarianism and lawlessness were evident early on in his rise to power. But he was seen by many in the West and by some relatively Russian liberals as a relatively benign, managerial figure. What we see now is the result of 20 years of power consolidation and subjugation of the law. Thanks to checks and balances and a buffer of officials within the judicial and electoral systems who were faithful to law and the constitution, Trump in 2017-21 wasn't in a position to flick a switch to enact mature fascism. But his actions and methods and what he tried to do quite clearly correlate with the fascist playbook.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With Trump, I think he looks at Putin, Xii, MBS, Assad aal-Sisi and even the likes of Orban (right wing America has a strange love-in with Hungary) and thinks what America needs in 2023 is a strongman leader and I'm that man, that I it wasn't for pesky democracy and its checks and balances he genuinely thinks he's the man to Make America Great Again and if he happens to line the pockets of his crank mates along the way, so what ots a small price to pay.

That's 20 stone.

I've seen some recent pictures of him and it's entirely possible that will be correct.

He uses the playbook, no doubt... But his motivation is just so far from politics that I struggle to think of him as a true facist leader. He is purely in it for the adulation and grift, in my opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's getting into speculative psychology. Is Putin's motivation purely 'political' and with no psychological content? He was certainly a gangster in the 90s, using his position in the FSB to enrich himself, and he has used his position as national leader to control unimaginable wealth, which is not just a tool of power, but involves a plethora of vulgar palaces, country residences, super yachts with dance floors that retract to turn into swimming pools, etc. I'd also observe that Putin has been quite ideologically flexible. He didn't start off as a hardline conservative. Wasn't initially unfriendly to the West. Adopted extreme nationalism and chauvinism when it was useful to harness those forces, but he has also eliminated potential rivals on the right wing of Russian politics.

Anyway, from a practical point of view, what matters is the impact on the political system, and even if we were to conclude that Trump is an accidental fascist, the important thing is that he has accelerated a transformation in the right-wing discourse in the States, meaning anyone seriously challenging for national level nominations in the Republican party have to mimic his extreme positions and anti-democratic, post-truth mannerisms.

Maybe not prison per se but he is likely getting found guilty of a few things and will at best be under house arrest for a good few years which will be wonderful.

Equally as odious. One is waging war from outside. The other is trying to wage war from within.

I very much doubt he will get away with not going to prison. Frankly there are multiple slam dunk offences he could go down for.

He ain't getting off the hook this time.

House arrest

He’ll get a presidential pardon when found guilty.

You have to be a little naive if you think he’s going to serve any real punishment.

I would research whether he can get a pardon on this election fraud case before throwing around emojis and words like "naive" .

By whom? I doubt Biden will and pretty sure with the Georgia one no president can pardon them.

If he's found guilty of a high level of election fraud, it's certainly a possibility.

I don't know the state, the legal system or the charges well enough to say anything for certain though. Neither do you.

Like I said let’s wait and see what happens,
