Gaffer the legal expert has spoken, close the thread.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you really think the USA will imprison a former president
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If he's found guilty of a high level of election fraud, it's certainly a possibility.
I don't know the state, the legal system or the charges well enough to say anything for certain though. Neither do you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No I don’t but if I was a betting man it would be no prison.
Like I said let’s wait and see what happens,
----------------------------------------------------------------------
betting men are usually wrong.
I don't think you get a presidential pardon for a state offence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Correct I believe a pardon would come from the state governor.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not in Georgia.
A 20-member parole board can, by law, only consider a pardon after two things;
1. The convict must have served a minimum of 65% of the original sentence
2. The convict has to admit to performing the crime
The Georgia governor has no say in the matter, nor does the Secretary of State.
So we went from 'you idiots think he's going to jail' to 'in my opinion he's not going to jail'.
It's possible Trump avoids prison. However, at the moment national polls show Biden leading Trump in the next presidential election. Trump can definitely win, but it's also true to say Biden can win against the man who won fewer votes than his rival both times he stood for president. So it's reasonably likely that it would require Biden to pardon him. Again: a possibility, maybe a gesture to try to bring down the volume in the national division, but not a certainty.
Meanwhile, in the Georgia election tampering case, I just looked up state procedures. It turns out that the Governor of Georgia does not have the power of pardon. This rests exclusively with the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles panel. I can't comment on the ideological composition of this panel, and it's quite possible they are Republican supporters, but they aren't prominent politicians subject to pressure from the Republican base to support Trump the way the state's Republican governor (Kemp) would be.
I think it's overwhelmingly likely that Trump will be convicted of offences for which jail time is the usual punishment. I think it's very possible he goes to jail.
House arrest.
Because can they really put an ex-president in jail with a bunch of criminals when he knows what he knows. Keeping his mouth shut isn't a talent he has and plenty of them would love to make money selling information he provides.

Does no one on here have google?
But I seriously doubt he'll do time. They'd be sentencing his Secret Service bodyguard to the same amount of time in the same prison. Can't see it happening.

I dont think hed go to jail either but if he did he'd go to rich man jail like Madoff or Phil Spector.
Im sad that a President can't pardon a state criminal, I'd love to see the ego explosion/meltdown of Trump begging Sleepy Joe to save him.

If he has broken the law then yes he has to go to prison ex president.or not. Otherwise it is pointless having any laws.
He is up on some very serious charges, so why would he not go to prison, if convicted?
To avoid civil war? You probably remember when Nixon was pardoned, it was done for the "national interest".

You think there'd be no civil unrest? Wouldn't necessarily be MAGA dolts. Nozees, 3%ers, Pride Boys, lone wolves. Could take 1 incident to set it off.
Look at the videos from Jan. 6 2021.
