I guess so but I don't accept it as a valid reason.
"I used to get in the car on a Friday and was dreading Saturday. I was thinking, 'I hope nothing happens'. I used to be petrified sitting in the chair."
Makes you wonder why they do it tbf refs
£100k a year probably helps.
I ref Sunday mornings, and faaack me is it tough. You have to have eyes everywhere, make split second decisions and even if you get the decision 100% correct you are still getting abuse. The linos are from the respective teams, half don’t understand the rules, the other half flat out cheat.
Always some khunt sub from one side claiming every single throw is a foul throw. Constant whining, moaning and abuse.
I faaaacking love it.
I give it back in bucketfuls, openly rip into players when they smash it into row Z, laugh at the feeble abuse they throw my way and shake their hands at the end.
I get the way Mike Dean felt, I don’t think I could sit in a chair miles from the action making decisions with the benefit of hindsight but not really understanding the full context of the game. I want to be in amongst it, hearing everything and understanding what’s going on.
He’s willing to openly admit this then god knows what else goes on. Officiating in the PL needs a complete reform from top to bottom, it’s an outright disgrace at this point.
But no let’s give them even more protection and make even more excuses for them despite their obvious and now admitted incompetence/outright corruption.
Ironically, they’re all gonna be getting more grief after this revelation now
Hurry up AI and take over VAR

I ref kids games sometimes and it's the parents that moan!
Bloody know it alls
As for Dean and VAR
yet another reason to scrap it.
Weird coincidence that these confessions of corruption center around Spurs versus Chelsea games. You had Clattenburg state that he went into a fixture between them with a pre-conceived plan to let Spurs get away with murder - which they all but did 😂.
But, as the OP says, the sooner we have a VAR team away from the on-field official team the better.
The refs are the football mafia. They choose who wins before the game has started.
There should be a live feed from the VAR Room with both visual and audio so people can understand the reasoning behind the decisions.

This isn’t true ….clatterenburg did not say that
He actually said during the game he allowed Tottenham to self destruct …..which they did
There was no pre-conceived plan

No need to scrap VAR, just need to get a completely separate team of VAR officials who have no close relationships with the on pitch referees so that there's no chance of such covering up like this taking place.
Makes you look back at every VAR non-decision your team has received the last few years. The fouls by Onana on our first game of the season and by Nick Pope last season, which both should have been penalties spring to mind for me. Both blatant and resulted apologies from PGMOL, but the ref probably wasn't sent over as VAR wanted to protect their mate.
Clubs are being cost points and money because of this.
It's flat out corruption.
The decisions they make have huge ramifications.
That decision led to tuchels sideline ban, with played a part in todd's decision to sack him, and the rest is history.
All from one awful decision.
Some on here scoffed in the past when corruption was suggested. Well here's proof of it.

At the time it was a nailed on penalty ….this admission makes things even worse
What goes through Deans head to come out with this is beyond me
With all the other weird decisions going on it will now be on the minds of fans when their team is wronged
He is an idiot
All that having been said, fair play to him for owning up to it and hopefully it leads to significant changes.
You can't just ban controversy. It gives us something to talk about in the pub after the game. It was the worry that pubs would close down when VAR came in as people would just sit in silence after the game and then leave. Opening weekend of the season, look at the beer sale stats in Wolves after the United game, 150% higher than in any previous Wolves match. The whole Wolves economy benefited and that is what we want from VAR. It is what we love about the PL, whether pundits are allowed to say ir or not.
Imagine something like Eastenders just showed people making reasonable decisions, and going about their lives sensibly without any conflict between characters.
*Phil stays in for the night and plays Call of Duty, Ian Beale did a poo and went to bed. DUM, DUM, DUM*
It is the DRAMA that makes the PL the greatest show on earth.
