Looks like this is happening. Decent attacking full back, not so decent defensive full back, works hard, lacks composure, pretty injury prone. Appeared to be a really good signing when joined Spurs, but fizzled out.

Man United sniffing around our rejects, wow!

Remember when they used to sign our best players?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You wanted to sign Dan James from us you mug
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We didn't though. And now you're signing a Spanish Dan James playing at left back.

Didn't he absolutely murder us once playing for Sevilla under Ole? Seem to remember he gave us a torrid time all game.

He's been a massive flop at Spurs though. They clearly don't seem worried about letting him join a rival. Says it all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That was the Europa semi final in 2020 wasn't it? Still don't know how we lost that game!

What's Buttner doing these days
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When I saw we were signing a Left Back I told my work colleague that I can't believe it's not Buttner.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This thread is churning out well

I'm clearly going to milk that joke...

Pull the udder one

We should go for former Chelsea CB whilst we're at it - Ken Monkou

Signing players like Weghorst, Reguillon etc is just a waste of time. They aren't good enough and we already know that.

New signings should either make us better or be top prospect. As he's neither then we don't want him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Feels a bit hyperbolic. It's a temporary loan signing to give us cover in case our third-choice LB is unavailable, and he'll be fourth choice in that position when Shaw and Malacia are back, unless he proves to be better than the others. No one was saying LB should be a priority position to strengthen this summer, and it's clearly not a strategic signing: it's just a reaction late in the window (when options are limited) to a freak double injury blow.

It's not the same thing as signing Weghorst, which was a symptom of long-term incompetence in recruitment and contract management, and at the time a fairly sensible decision given few alternatives. He didn't impress, but he did enable us to deploy (in the prolonged absence of Martial) Rashford on the left where he could make much more of a difference. I'd bet the second half of the season would have gone slightly worse without having him in the squad as someone who could do the basics of a centre forward.

Actually signing Reguilon if you want to be this 'fast transition' side I keep hearing about makes a lot of sense. He'll run up and down all day

Good on the counter, seems like a nice lad, isn't a racist like Cucurella or murderer like Alonso. Can't think of many other positives.

Spot on.

I wish football could be discussed more without the constant emotional gibberish. I don't know if people genuinely mean half the things they say or if its just emotional venting but the tribalism and hyperbole make it a really murky swamp to wade through, for me.

Every teenager can do the basics. Use them instead. All these are just excuses for manager who has a finicky thing about players he trusts.

“Every teenager can do the basics”

It’s obviously not that simple though is it? I do think there is a point where getting any LB just seems a bit pointless but tbf to EtH he does use youth when he feels they are ready.

Kovar, Williams, Fernandez, Mengi, Elanga. All youngsters that could have played a part this season but have gone.

Imagine the emotional eruptions we'd be dealing with if we'd not brought in a cheap loan striker in January, and instead used a player from the academy who then proved absolutely incapable of performing at PL age, including implementing those 'basics' that he can do against fellow teenagers. The youngster gets dropped, career set back when what he really needed was a loan. The team struggles with Rashford not suited to the CF role (and doing some of The Basics, like back to goal play, movement within the width of the posts, and pressing, worse than Weghorst) and Garnacho brilliant in moments but ultimately a bit too raw to regularly start matches.

We should remember that sometimes being promoted too early to the first team squad isn't the best thing for a youngster who needs minutes. Diallo came out of last season ahead of Pellistri in the pecking order. Fernandez needs regular minutes, not the possibility of a few scraps of football if Dalot gets injured.
