I think they would be perfectly valid to be angry at him for using their cause to better his brand, when it becomes apparent that he was only pretending to care about them. Perhaps he could apologize for his actions in that regard and show some accountability, rather than trying to deflect it off himself and apologizing for how they feel.

So he should come out and say something like
"Sorry for lying I cared about you. I could have stayed quiet and been a normal football robot and say 'no comment', like 99% of my peers would have done. Sorry for raising awareness for your cause even though I am married to my wife with a few kids".
Would something like the above be ok with you?
That apology starts off well, but then becomes more disingenuous.
I can't speak for the community, but I'd imagine if it was me I'd rather people just stayed quiet, rather than using the cause as an excuse to make yourself look better when you don't actually genuinely care.
Just heard talksport in the car and they are still talking about it. Salty scousers ringing up crying.
But there is no outrage...
