A fair result although to concede so late was a blow. At one stage we had a completely new midfield on the park. Good to see Wilson fit again and Barks could have won it for us with the penultimate kick. Sibley was excellent when he came on but although Nelson was pretty well faultless my MOM was Smith who did so well in two positions. Washington caused lots of problems and Waggy was running for 96 minutes. Collins did well when he came on. Fornah got a silly yellow and then could have had another for a rash challenge.

Overall I thought there was too much of the trying-to-play-the-killer-pass, nearly always intercepted. The ref, while a bit fussy at times, did well and I wish she had been in charge at Bolton.

I'm hearing their goal was offside?

Just back from the match and feeling disappointed, however we did play a back 4, Elder played in midfield.

The ref was very good, I think she was a woman.

Evening All (YAYYY!!! Got internet)

There was such a blatant handball in the centre of the park, before it went right and then led to their goal. Can’t comment whether it was offside but it’s simple: Hourihane should have scored in the 3rd minute.

They were no great shakes but neither are we. Lots of nearly balls and wrong decisions- lots of subs - Sibbz looked bright for a short time but we have no gem, no spark of a player who can excite us.
Used to think that we would produce half diamonds from the academy but that boat has sunk.

Agree with everything Chicago said. Overall I thought a much improved display compared to Bolton but it seemed we tried to force it a bit too much and turned over possession very regularly as a consequence. I thought Nelson and Fozzy were very good and Smith vastly improved. I liked the look of Embleton. A draw was fair for me but having gone ahead we were panicky in our clearances and invited the equaliser.

Some further thoughts - One day (soon I hope) PW will have a full squad available so that we can get a settled side. We should then be a force and really competitive. Considering all our injuries I guess it was too much to expect a balanced midfield today. Embleton does have something and can pick a pass and barring injury will be a very useful addition when fully fit. I suspect Fornah has much more to offer than shown so far. I think he needs to impose himself more but that is perhaps to much to expect of a newcomer so he may well develop into a solid DM. Elder has yet to settle but not surprising in view of early injury and not yet getting 90 mins in his preferred position.

Just a word for Wildsmith who is developing into an excellent number 1. Not much to do today but when called on made some crucial saves. Also for Collo who looked to have something to prove and did so with his pen and very useful link-up play. I agree with Vidal that Fozzy was his usual dependable self and will take some shifting until we are back to two games a week.

Another shout for the ref who managed the game in a calm and efficient way without getting anything seriously wrong. Maybe the players were more respectful given it was a woman but plenty of male refs in our league could watch and learn.

A further thought. Can we please stop this "Gosh the ref was a woman" nonsense. They are out there you know and you have all presumably met one or two. Women that is, albeit not necessarily referees.

Not reffing a men's game Heb!

posted on 16/9/23

It's bound to attract comment Heb as we have not had a female ref before last season as far as I remember. There is interest in any new phenomenon, for example when Ardiles and Villa joined Spurs all those years ago it was a great novelty. No doubt, as with foreign signings, female officials will become commonplace and won't invite any special attention. It doesn't indicate sexism any more than the focus on Argentinian players signifiied racism.

The PW brigade out includes a friend who posted a stat ( requires correcting if wrong ) that our last shot ON target was in the first 45 mins vs Peterborough.

As I was busy with the the little man yesterday ( we went to Oxford Street) I had a quick look and the fact our stats looked bleak as did the level of comments painted a clear picture.

Looking at the fixtures coming up there's certainly 4-5 winnable (must win?) games coming up against weaker sides. We've faced the bulk of promotion favourites Portsmouth, Oxford, Bolton, Wigan, Posh so perhaps now that our players are returning and can ideally get a run of 5-10 games and find their rhythm we'll find a solution to march up the table.

Need to find one for the predictions table too. 10th? Geez.

There was very little long kicking from Wildsmith yesterday, the aim was generally to get the ball to the feet of Cashin. He was a bit too ambitious with some of his passing though. I don't know if trying to play it more from the back was because Pompey don't tend to do a high press or a change in tactics but that part at least was welcome even if not well executed.

I was slightly more encouraged compared to other games but we still need significsnt improvement in passing and ball retention. I've got my tickets for Carlisle and Blackpool and hoping for better as always. At present we are a distance away from a team that looks like challenging for the top two.
