Of course it's not just all about winning. I need to clarify that. Some of my happiest memories are of attending my first games in 1987. We weren't that good then but had players who always gave 100% on the pitch.

What made you support United? Does it fall under one of the following?

1. Inherited
2. Success
3. Geography
4.Other, please specify

Interested to know if it falls under other as good to add to my research.

My Dad supported United and I found it cool a fellow Cymro was the young star striker up front. It was around 1984/85.

Totally agree with the op. For me the turning point was having kids. Once you have them your priorities completely change and everything else is secondary.

Kind of agree but then my lad started playing, was decent, got scouted by my team at a young age and suddenly it is full on 6 days a week and talked about incessantly the other 1. Travelling here there and everywhere. Even his mother got into it and here we are.

My time of supporting United came after the despairs of Munich and Sir Matts rebuilding period and then the glories of the late 60s that culminated on the night in 1968 all built on the philosophy of Busby’s 'United Way' and the outrageous talents of 3 EFOY The United Trinity. ... all the same team. Imagine that today! This is why I grew up as a small child in Manchester to support United over City. It was never a choice it just happened. I was taken to watch City first actually (before I can remember) but the vista and smell of OT hooked me and that was that. United fell apart in early early 70s. We were crap. I mean really crap. Nothing like today. Mangers bought old and past it players and eventually United got relegated and bounced back again under Tommy Doc. We lost to Div2 Southampton in the Cup final (my first trip ever to That London), but went back and won as treble busters. If I am honest those days to me were the most glorious and happiest in my time of being a Red over anything that came with Fergie. Maybe because I was young lad and had no over responsibilities. Liverpool dominated football then, and throughout the 70s and 80s just doing well in the Cup occasionally and always being the biggest Club in the land with the highest attendances and invading towns on a Ben Hur epic scale on away days was all we had. You also have to appreciate that winning the Cup in them days was massive as big as winning the FL at least, for us supporters. Winning stuff has never been the incentive to me as a football supporter. But being part of something every week, the history, the matchday rituals, the heartaches and the glory, is literally, everything about being a Man United supporter.

Ohhh yeaaaah so mostly inherited but also Aberdeen syndrome. It was observed in the late 80s and early 90s that a lot of people who supported Aberdeen, started supporting Man Utd due to their boss and fellow Scot moving there.

I wonder if essentially supporting individuals has become more or less of a thing since then? The Messi/Ronaldo cult thing was pretty notable but not sure if it is such a thing now that they are gone.

Would anyone really identify as a Bruno Fernandes fan?

To be honest it's still pretty important to me, although I'm also at a point where I can accept losses more as I know we aren't as good as we once were.

For example the time we got battered at OT to City under Sir Alex was a lot worse than getting hammered by Liverpool to me as it felt like there was a lot more riding on it as we were actually a team that challenged at the time.

Not sure if anyone else has felt this but betting on football has kinda killed things for me in terms of really caring. Over the years I’ve happily bet on Arsenal or Liverpool or City etc to win and when money is on the line and a supposed sworn enemy scores and helps you win it kinda takes away half the fun of really only ever wanting your own side to win.

That’s pretty sad and should be used on a cautionary betting ad 😅

It means the same amount to me, but I consume it differently now.

Between 6 and 15 I would watch every bit of football I could whether it was Spurs or not, I would watch Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham - no problems. English team in Europe, I would support them and be really happy if they won.

If Spurs lost 5-1, I would still stay up to watch Match of the day just to see our 1. Lose a game, I would shrug it off like it was nothing, win and I would be in the play ground trying to recreate the goals.

Between 16 and 21 I just stopped watching football unless it was Spurs, the World Cup or Euros. I was out with mates and nothing got in the way of that time.

Now married with kids, football has crept back in more and more, and my boys are starting to get into it which I love, the 3 of us watching it together and then seeing them doing what I used to do by trying to recreate goals in the back garden. My love for the game has really been rekindled and I am a football junkie again.

Let him know he could play it outside if he wanted to?

I have a daughter. She has never been interested in football, but declared herself as 'United fan' when Beckham played for us (and made me buy her girls United tops with his name and number on the back every 2 years). Same when Ronaldo came.

I spoke to her yesterday actually and asked he if she had watching the DB Netflix docs. She said she had started watching the first episode but gave up as it was mostly about his football career.

I reckon propably half the e-fans that United amassed in the Fregie years were girls like her.

Still hurts but not as much as when we lost when I was young. I've never experienced what we're going through now so often enjoy watching old highlights from the SAF era.

Like most on here the older I have become the less I sulk after a defeat.

This season I am not even remotely bothered the way things have gone because I can see it for what it is. The exact same thing happened to the dips a few years back.

It also helps with having other interests outside of football like Golf and Cricket.

Just saw a Tweet by TalkSport with Ray Parlour stating Ten Hag could well get the boot for this form. I pointed out that a certain (now) top-rated manager lost 8 of the first 14 PL games in 2020/21 and the first 3 the next season. A manager who himself had some problem players he needed to get rid of. You'd don't have to be a genius to guess which manager that is!

Maybe we need some poster boys back that can get the girls interested again. As the man above pointed out, there used be lots of girls getting Beckham and Ronaldo shirts and girls would imagine being with their heros.

Now if you walk into the club shop and ask for a popular shirt for girls they might say, "well we can do a Greenwood 3rd kit"

"what is different about a Greenwood 3rd kit"? They ask

"Well, it is white with splashes of red on it so your daughter can imagine she is in a relationship with the United player"

Problem with that Diafol is that

1) we may lose many many more this season as there’s no real sign anything is gonna get any better if the players have checked out

2) some of those problem players are the ones this manager has brought in. It’s not like he’s working to a plan that looks like time will heal all

Aaaaanywho, I’m sure a win against Brentford will be exactly the tonic we need.

1. Yes, it could get even worse from here. I know that's a possibility.
2. I don't think his signings are problems in terms of their attitude and application. Jury is out on their actual capability as footballers of course but I do think they're all made of the right stuff.

We desperately need a win tomorrow. Going back to the 90s a bit if I may. I remember SAF losing three in a row to Newcastle, Southampton and Chelsea in 1996 and we won our next game via an OG off Nigel Winterburn's ar$e. I'd take that tomorrow!

If we play like we played vs Gala and keep 11 men on the pitch vs Brentford I think we will do ok. I would stiffen up the defence and bring Maguire in CB for Linderlof and stick him at RB for Dalot if no AWB

I think so too.

I'd bring in Maguire as well and move Lindelof to RB with Dalot LB. Let's see what Amrabat can do in midfield.
