GK should have saved NMLs goal.
Lack of quality in the final third has let Derby down

Well we used up all our missed chances today so we should score with every attack against Barnsley.

"Even if we had lost 2-0, I would have been proud of our performance"
First off, all credit to Crewe. Heroic defending, blocks, last-ditch tackles. But they should have been blown away by half-time. Lack of pace and quality in the final third cost us and meant we were horribly caught out on the break.
I much prefer four at the back but Ward and Wilson made a big difference and some of Ward's crosses are top notch. How best to fit Ward in for ninety minutes?
MOM had to be NML with Hourihane not far behind.
This side is still an enigma. Maybe two more players in could sort it.

Having got back and reflected our performance was better than I thought at the time. It was frustrating that for all the possession in dangerous areas we didn't create clearer chances. I do think we should try to play throught the middle more. Defences in the lower leagues seem to be able to cope pretty well with floaty crosses. Ward's were much more vicious and harder to defend against though.
I thought Bird was excellent once again. I assume Fornah has blotted his copybook somehow and as he has gone from seeming to be a player we might build the team around to an outcast in the blink of an eye.
In Fornah's last two games he made some costly errors, mainly through insisting on working the ball with his right foot all the time. Oppos soon cottoned on to this and were able to catch him out. It should take very little to rectify this and then we could end up with a really good player.
Despite NML being named MotM, most of his crosses were shocking. He also missed a sitter with the header.
Not sure why Warne thought lobbing (mostly crap) crosses to the smallest centre-forward on the field was likely to achieve?
Seems to be a recurring theme Scouse. Move the ball around well, get it into wide areas, get the cross in which is headed away comfortably, do it again, do it again, do it again.

"60% of the time it works every time ..."
I found myself getting frustrated very quickly seeing the same style of play in the first half. I managed to start watching the game after 30 mins had been played. Move ball around as we approach the box, pass to the wide man and cross it in, Crewe have practically everyone in the box and someone heads it out. Repeat.
If the squad have been coached to play in that style and the players can see it's not effective surely their own football intelligence (captain) should be kicking in to switch it to a central attack and break them down through the middle.
Gaps were opening up but the advantage was not taken until in the second half. The other thing I noticed was that Smith was trying hard to break forward and got into opportunities but this is a player who has managed two goals in nine years!
I had hoped we'd consider Sammie Szmodics as he was making his way up the divisions and he's the type of player we need from the lower leagues.
Forgetting for a moment that Nhampton were dire, Derby did adopt a much more nuanced approach in that game by playing as Vidal and Desi have mentioned, yes, but also by mixing in some fabulous, quick football down the middle and between the lines.
It did concern me that after the game PW said his only criticism was that they did not use the flanks enough! Maybe players like Hourihane and Bird did let their own instincts take over and apply some guile to the proceedings but it's worrying that PW seems to want to put a stop to that. Pumping zillions of crosses into the box, no matter what the quality, in the hope that the law of averages will mean a few goals will result is not an attractive proposition unless you have one or more big goal-scoring strikers in the side.
Seeing his style first hand it's understandable why fans are incredibly frustrated if that is what you're seeing game after game.
It's clear this squad can't work to his requirements ( 60% of the time, every time) unless we have a L1 Figo or Beckham.... possibly where Ward comes in. But it's clear how you counter that. Stop Ward you prevent the threat. At least N M-L is simmering nicely. We desperately need to get more players switched on, I should add Nelson and Bird is looking livelier than he did prior to injury in the advanced role.
