Used to love watching Gerd Muller. Proper goal machine.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I broke my neighbours window by volleying a ball screaming Muller in 1974

I saw him at a funeral a few years later and he said "oi Muller get up the bar and get me a drink you still owe me for that window from 1974.

Great anecdote.

RIP The Kaiser.

Not many, since our resident hectagenorian left the site...Sandy!

Yes quite a few times, Germany youth team 1st time
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Personally I would have liked to have seen players like Rensenbrink, Cruyff, Rep, Neeskens, Haan, Gerd Muller, Beckenbuer, Breitner etc...

Some great name there
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hann might not be as well known as some of the other players you listed but he scored some fantastic long range goals in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Some proper screamers at that World Cup. At least two , maybe, outrageous Dutch goals, Haan and perhaps Rep?

It's the first World Cup I remember having watched bits.

I also remember the star of Peru, Teófilo Cubillas, netting one or two corkers too.

I also remember a controversy around an English ref who blew for FT when a corner kick was launched and the attacking team only went and scored. Sweden-Brazil iirc. Clive something? Might have been the same ref who once booked a player twice but failed to send him off? Or that might have been Poll. Far too long ago now to remember clearly.

Granted I was only a kid, but I don't think the sense of discovery that used to surround all these tournaments is something that can be easily replicated today.

The ref you’re referring to was Clive Thomas I think

Yes it caused some controversy.

Weirdly when I saw Zagallo had died I only saw the picture first and thought it was Beckenbauer. And now Beckenbauer has died not even a week later.

We are running out of legends from that era of football. RIP
