Don't want to overhype him too early, but he's arguably the greatest midfielder of all time.

I do think he's looking promising... Considering his age and stature, he really keeps the ball well in high pressure situations.

His passing is still hit and miss, that will hopefully improve game after game.

I'd rank him above
Posebon
James Garner
Tunnicliffe

And just below
Macheda
Januzaj
Pereira

He may well be the next Pogba but he may just turn out to be the next Tuanzebe

In all seriousness, there obviously isn't much you can take from yesterday's game, but I was very impressed with the way he handled himself physically. Bullied the Wigan midfielders at times. For someone who looks fairly slight, he is deceptively strong.

We've seen far too many false dawns for me to get overly excited at this point - but I will say in terms of raw talent he's one of the best prospects to come out of the academy in a while. In the last couple of decades its probably only Greenwood who has made the transition to the first team as comfortably. And, going back to my original point - he is incidentally the best example of talent not being the be all and end all.

players with his specific skillset are like gold dust. top clubs are always going to have use for midfielders who are comfortable under pressure and can turn on the ball

think he's a massive talent and has a skillset the England team are really lacking, so from that perspective hoping he continues to develop

I think people are going a little overboard tbh, he looks to have potential but so do a lot of teenagers. We don't look that much better with him in the side (probably not his fault) and people are going on like he's the second coming of Modric.

Let the boy get some minutes and we will see how he progresses.

Hes the best at the moment regardless of age. 5 midfielders, 6 if you add Bruno. Why are we scared of saying this? If we say it they become rubbish?

Btw our best wide player (maybe our best attavker) is 18. We need to stop holding ourselves back. Almost single player we've let go is at the same level or better than those superstars we keep signing. Almost every game we see it. We spend so much because we have an inferiority complex with our youth system.

Take them for who they are.

Quality player. He had the Hungarian Keita in his pocket at Anfield. This guy is better than Rodri imo.

We should all know that players whose talent stands out at that age sometimes regress, sometimes surge. For that reason, I'm not too fixated on how good he will be, and what his final destination as a United player is. But for me his emergence has been the single most enjoyable thing about our season so far, and I really hope he continues to grow as a player (and matures into a well balanced adult). He's so technically assured, which must help his self-confidence when on the ball, and his calmness and the maturity of his decision making really impress me. He rarely looks rushed, even when receiving the ball under pressure. And he often uses that calmness to evaluate different passing possibilities in his own time (if the early pass isn't on). I only read about the concept of 'biomechanics' in sport quite recently, but I'd suggest Mainoo is biomechanically (is that a word?) elite: really good at achieving a range of passing angles without having to make big adjustments to body position.

I think he's one of these youngsters who only himself or injuries can prevent him from being a top player.

He has a football brain far beyond his years.

He doesn't have the passing range of a Scholes or a Pogba but then again neither did Xavi Hernandez.

With regards to Casemiro if he can get last seasons form back it would be great I'd snap another teams hand off to take him off our books nevertheless.

...alternatively: when we have genuine talents, they are fast-tracked into the first team and adored by the fans, like Mainoo and Garnacho.

Meanwhile, which of the recent youth players to be sold have subsequently made us bitterly regret letting them go? Garner? Iqbal?

Not read the replies but there’s a bit of Thiago in his play.

Keane, Elanga of the top if my head. As of a few months we let Fernandez so we could try out reguilon and end up with Dalot there, not sure he has put in one good cross from the right, certainly not the left. I'll have a firm debate on iqbal/Hannibal vs Mount.

I just feel we buy so many average just to justify our efforts. After signing them, we use more efforts trying to prove our signings were not wrong by making sure we dont give them a chance. Its like biting ourselves from both ends.

I'd agree. Keeps the ball moving well, good in tight spaces and invariably picks the right option.

Hopefully he turns out to be more reliable fitness wise.
