I’m sure the people voting were watching plenty of Ligue 1 and MLS football in 2023.
Daz, I'm not even sure many of his MLS games are factored in because of the cutoff date. Maybe it was the hat-trick against Curaçao that tipped the scales.
McWinston, you believe the voters all thought Messi was the world's best performing footballer for the time frame judged. You don't believe anyone conflated performances, voted on reputation, or allowed bias or personal agendas to influence their choices.
Fine, no point trying to convince you otherwise.

Sorry, just read the rest of the thread and saw that was covered.

Yup.
Thoughts on Bernardo Silva, melton? What kind of back end of the season did he have?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Would have been a good shout. Personally I think Rodri was our player of the season last year and so far this one too. Got the goal in the CL final as well.
Hi Melts, thanks for that.
Yeah, Rodri did cross my mind too, but it's extremely difficult for a player in his sort of position to be recognised across the board. It's far more common for people to want to acknowledge attacking play - and I I include myself in that category too.
While the ensemble nature of City's game is what makes them such a formidable team, it also meant you supplied 6 of the 12 players shortlisted, and that's obviously going to split the vote of those who gave more weight to City's exploits. The fact that we've both given a name other than Haaland underlines that.

the award is for who players and managers think performed the best, there is no actual specific gauge or criteria. its who the pros thought performed the best therfore the only way the vote can be wrong is if its rigged.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
By the way, it isn't just the captains and managers. It's also the media and the fans. Per FIFA:
"Each of the four groups of voters within the jury has the same electoral weight irrespective of the actual number of voters in those groups (i.e. the votes of the coaches, the captains, the specialist journalists and the fans shall each make up one quarter of the poll, notwithstanding the number of voters in each group."
For your guide, Haaland won the coach and media votes (13+13=26 points). Messi won the player and fan votes (13+13=26 points). They each took second place in the groups won by the other (11+11=22 points), hence them finishing level on points (26+22=48 points apiece).

Yep completely understand why a player like him doesn’t win awards like this, just wish they would from time to time.
