“The boy Smith put it on a toadstool from 70 yards.” π
“Definitely a penalty …”
“Stevenage fans were the only ones you could hear “
However, he also said
“Warney will sleep well because we’ve got to play all of his rivals”
Fair point actually π
Fair play to him - that is a good (and accurate) interview.
Interview lasts 5+ mins. I can't look or listen to him that long.
CBT fit for the next game.
Mate managed to speak to the man himself.
Just to echo the above, apparently the atmosphere was superb. Hopefully we maintain that as the level.
Apparently every time Steve Evans sat down there was a ' you fat barsteward' chant in his direction.
Cracking night in Benidorm πΊπΊπΊπΊπΊπΊ
A poor first half as has often been the case at home. It feels as though we are content to match up against the opposition, take few risks, and to wait until the game opens up a bit before taking off the handbrake.
I thought we needed the third midfielder and when Smith came on Bird was free to roam a bit and we got well on top without creatng too much. The South Stand were superb and I'm sure it lifted the team. I thought we dereved the win. Cashin, Bird, Wilson and Elder were maybe the pick but most were a decent 6 or 7 out of 10.
While the first half might have been drab you would have to say that Warne got it right today with his selection and with the subs which changed the game in our favour. With the bad news about Collins we all needed a lift. Anothe big one next Saturday.

Good points Vidal. For me, Collins gets criticised because he's more of a workhorse... but its like anything in life...you don't know what you've got til it's gone...
If we are successful in signing Gayle it will be interesting to see how Warne uses him. In style he is more like a poor man’s Robbie Fowler though hopefully restricting his sniffing to seeking out goalscoring opportunities. Without a striker who can play with his back to goal we will need to play more like we did in the second half yesterday and use the channels. You would think that would still be the case if and when Waghorn and Washington return. It’s possible it might even benefit us if we are forced into more of a midfield-based style of play.
Having seen the highlights I don’t think Steve Evans should had his penalty. There was no intent and the ball just hit Nelson’s arm. In real time (as these things should always be assessed) it would have been harsh indeed to have given it.
I don’t think Nelson’s arm was not in a natural position. The other way and we’d have been claiming it.
But it’s not like we haven’t been on the receiving end of some questionable decisions.
A few double negatives there Fin, hard to know what you are saying! If it was the other way around I would be saying we were very lucky to get a penalty.
I've only seen the 5/6m highlights.
Maybe it's old age, as I can't even see anyone appealing for a handball?
A couple of their players went to the ref. At the time I thought they were asking whether the ball had gone over the line before Sonny cleared it but maybe they were claiming the handball.

Ooops. Too many child distractions preventing proof reading. I do not think his arm was in a natural position so the ball hitting it even without intent is a penalty if I understand the rule correctly. I watched it back many times (didn’t even see what might have been a penalty at first). But happy it wasn’t given.
I too thought the appeals originally were for the ball over the line but I guess they were for both.
When watching live I did not spot any "handball". The replays did however show the ball striking Nelson's elbow which was quite high so I reckon VAR would have given a penalty. I don't care because we have had so many bad decisions go against us and they do seem to even out over a season. Having said that there is one which sticks in the memory, really rankles and could cost us at the end - Wildsmith's ludicrous red at Bolton. Without that I'm convinced we would not have lost that game and may even have won it.
Hopefully we don't have to reflect on that game and those awful ref decisions come the end of the season.
Watching that game live I felt we were so bad at the time that we were destined to lose the game. You can never tell though. It was certainly a terrible decision.

As fans we always grumble about Refs decisions... but I dont think think I've ever experienced so many consistently bad Refs as in L1...
For me it is less about the big decisions than a general lack of common sense, inconsistency and often over-fussiness. In the heat of the moment it can be difficult to see whether an offence has genuinely occurred or not so I forgive them for that.

Here's to returning to the Championship and our own consistently inconsistent performances being the reason we grumble on here!
What is going on at Sunderland?
Sacked Mowbray who did a fantastic job and appointed Beale. I'm surprised how despised he is given his work at QPR decent, his loyalty not so much. Fans weren't happy with this appointment and seems the board have reacted by sacking him.
