Huh, cole is always the chosen left back for best xi's... whos picking Evra, Robertson and Clichy over him?

I never much liked him as an individual, cant really qualify why? as a LB? one of the best I have seen in England and Europe, great pace, good on the ball and timed his tackles well, would still walk into teams nowadays easily

Who brings up Clichy?

As above, Cole is considered by most to be the best left back ever in the PL. If Robertson is more talked about it might be because he's still playing. Evra has always been rated highly but not above Cole and I rarely hear anyone bring up Clichy in a serious debate.

Irwin could be great at either LB or RB, great wee player, still think Cole is better at LB but Denis rarely had anything other than a 7/10 or above match rating

Ronaldo cited him as his toughest ever opponent. Ashley Cole was very consistent for both club and country.

I think his antics off the pitch with him also being dubbed 'Cashley Cole' made a lot of people dislike him, he didn't seem a very nice individual. Appears to be a more mature these days though, which you would kinda expect for a man in his 40s.

Cole was part of the "golden generation" that did nothing for england. Even if he was good, he was good as a traditional left back, which basically meant nothing in the midst of England's disappointments

I preferred the Arsenal Cole to the Chelsea Cole. With Arsenal his attacking play was really good to go with his great defending but at Chelsea he was more a defender and didn't contribute as much going forward (Jose influence).

If you pick an all time PL 11, Cole gets in regardless.

Nearly everyone has Cole as the GOAT LB of the prem era.

Agree with other comments , Cole seems to be rated just about right. I would say most people say he is the best LB in PL era, as others have said most accept his peers being Irwin, Evra and Robertson.

Wasn't there a rumour about him and a mobile phone going up a certain place?

In fairness to Andy Robertson, before his injuries in the last season or two, he's the closest i've seen to Ashley Cole in terms of style.

Great defensively and going forward, but I think injuries have stopped Robertson in his tracks now.

What always amused me is that Ronaldo always had very tough games v Cole whereas Valencia often seemed to get the better of him!

Robertson better going forward. 2 seasons back to back of 10+ assists from full back in the league which goes quite understated imo Vs other full backs known to be good going forward / creative like Trent. Cole better defensively.

Evra in style I think was more like Cole, at least Cole at Chelsea, but Cole still better defensively.

One of the few England players who has turned up in every tournament he played.
