So you are saying Kane (pen) was the problem?

posted on 2/4/24

Most fouled team in the PL and yet just 1 penalty to show for it (the fewest in the league), something doesn`t add up.

Chelsea lead the way with 9 penalties so far, closely followed by Varpool & Woolwich with 8.

TBF i can only think of 2 pens that could have been given. Most recent one vs Palace, foul on Werner. Ordinarily you might say that perhaps there wasnt enough contact but when you look at some of the penalties given to other teams you can make that Werner one a stone wall penalty,

Should have had on vs Sheff Utd too

There was a cast iron one in the home game v Penited also not given, can`t remember who fouled who but it was the most blatant foul you will see, predictably the ref bottled it, but fortunately it did not cost us any points.

6 games in a row when we have failed to score in the first half

That’s just a silly stat. Felt we’ve always been slow starters, especially after Conte. That needs to change. Can’t keep on waiting to Chase the game to turn up.

Yeah, that was the most controversial penalty not given in that game 🙄

To be fair, and I'm not always a big fan of stats the ones mentioned are for the he most part fairly positive, show a change in the way you're playing under Ange?

The Kane one is interesting.

I dont know the stats but we must be creating more than we have done so in the last decade and are thus scoring more.

There have been games when a clinical finisher would have saved us / seen us score in the first half / take the lead / put a game to bed and Kane would be the man for that but would he fit into the general way we play and the energy that our attackers put into a game?

Good point. This was always the question before he moved to Bayern.

Would he have changed the course of the game against Fulham or Wolves where we lost? Unsure

last season he got 30 goals and we were crap for large parts of it, playing in a team with a passive, defensive approach that relied on counter attacking.

I am sure he would have filled his boots in an Ange team but i think that both Kane and Ange-ball would have had to adapted slightly, to cater for each other.

If this is the benchmark for what a penalty should be awarded for then Spurs and most teams should have had a couple dozen each:

4 players sent off - only Liverpool have more with 5 players red-carded.

Yep, that dive under zero contact was given as a pen with the game evenly poised, the officials bottled overturning it and it changed the entire dynamic of the game. Varpool were also given game changing pens for 2 clear dives in a game v Newcastle, among many others.

Helps having a manager looking to play attacking football, which we haven't had in a while. Would have been interesting seeing Kane in this team under Ange.

The stats point to a mostly positive season but what they don't take into account is how we had no Europe and went out of the cups early.

If we get top 4 then it's a job well done I guess. But if we don't then I would actually say that Ange has underachieved and it's a bit disappointing.

Without Kane, a new system and new faces? I think 6th or below would be underachieving. I thought 5th place would be a realist target at the start of the season.

Fine margins but I would consider 4th as over achieving.

I’d say fourth/fifth is probably par, considering you’ve no Europe to contend with. That balances out the new manager aspect.

Well there has been a fair bit of money spent, well over £100m, and it's a pretty good team all things considered, even without Kane. Ange has had no European football to focus on and the cup performances were disappointing. Given that and the start we made, I think top 4 should always have been the target and certainly an achievable one. You look at what ETH did in his first season for a failing United and he got top 4 and a League Cup and he had Europe in the background too.

So yeah I would consider it, despite the injury disruption for a month or so, an underachievement.
