Coventry City will need to dig deep to summon up as much energy as possible when they take on a determined Ipswich Town side looking for a huge three points to help their quest for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
The Tractor Boys travelled to the CBS Arena knowing that if they secure a win they will only need a single point on the final day of the season, when they entertain virtually down Huddersfield Town at Portman Road, to return to the top flight ahead of Leeds United.
Just four points required for Ipswich Town to complete an incredible climb up the Football League pyramid and secure a place in the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. Successive promotion from League One to the Premier League is a rare accolade to achieve with only Southampton and Norwich City achieving the feat in 2012 and 2011 respectively.
They first need to at least get a result at Coventry City - a side who narrowly missed out on an FA Cup final after losing on penalties to Man United - before welcoming Huddersfield Town to Portman Road with the Terriers fate all but sealed.
They need to address the run of form they are in too if they are to leapfrog Leeds United too. Both sides are level on points with the Tractor Boys behind on goal difference by seven and have failed to win in their last four outings with three successive draws so far. A dramatic ending is expected on the last day of the regular season on Saturday but a point here will be enough to put Ipswich in the driving seat.
Ipswich Town Manager Kieran McKenna is excited for the week ahead as Town travel to Coventry this evening.
The Blues’ visit to the CBS Arena kicks off at 8pm ahead of Saturday’s home game with Huddersfield, where the second automatic promotion place will be decided.
“It’s about recovery, which has gone well with the players in good spirits after a good break in the lead up to Hull,” the Town boss said, speaking ahead of the game.
“We’re looking forward to the game because we have a great week ahead, with two big games. We know Saturday will have a significance in either direction but we want to put ourselves in a really good position with a good result.”
Coventry sit ninth in the Championship table, having also recently made the semi-finals of the FA Cup before falling narrowly short against Manchester United.
“They are a good team with a lot of good players and a really experienced manager (Mark Robins),” Kieran said.
“They have shown they can be a big threat to teams in this division and also the division above.
“We know they are a team we will need to give full respect to because they will be fully motivated, so we’ll do our best to get a positive result.
“We will go in there and play in front of a brilliant away end and we’ll give everything we can to get the result to make everyone happy.”
Coventry City last six:
Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Sky Blues
Sky Blues 2-3 Hull City
Sky Blues 3-3(P) Manchester United
Birmingham City 3-0 Sky Blues
Southampton 2-1 Sky Blues
Sky Blues 2-1 Leeds United
Ipswich Town's last six:
Hull City 3-3 Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town 1-1 Middlesbrough
Ipswich Town 0-0 Watford
Norwich City 1-0 Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town 3-2 Southampton
Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Ipswich Town

Coventry City team news:
The Sky Blues are currently battling fatigue after three games in the space of seven days, including their energy-sapping FA Cup semi-final that went to extra-time at Wembley, as well as having to deal with fresh injury and suspension issues. Influential midfielder Ben Sheaf is the latest casualty who sat out Saturday’s goalless draw at Blackburn with an unspecified ‘muscle’ injury, joining Luis Binks (Achilles), Victor Torp (stomach) and Fabio Tavares (ankle ligaments). To add insult to injury, centre-half Liam Kitching’s red card at the weekend means he is suspended for the last two games of the season and the first of next, while Joel Latibeaudiere has been managing a calf issue in recent weeks.
Assuming there are no fresh injuries from Ewood Park, City’s only fit and available centre-backs will be Bobby Thomas and Latibeaudiere, although Jake Bidwell could do a job on the left if the Jamaican is struggling. That means Milan van Ewijk will be favourite to play at right-back and Jay Dasilva on the left, although if Latibeaudiere is fit then Bidwell could provide fresh legs at left-back, having only gone on for the final five minutes at the weekend.
Ipswich Town team news:
- Left-back assist machine Leif Davis limped off in the latter stages of Saturday night's draw at Hull after rolling his ankle. Will he be fit to go again?
- George Hirst and Wes Burns both started at the weekend following lengthy lay-offs. Will they be good to go again?
- Might McKenna freshen up in some other areas too? The likes of Harry Clarke, George Edmundson, Jack Taylor, Nathan Broadhead, Jeremy Sarmiento and Kieffer Moore are options for change.

Just landed at 10 this morning from Lisbon, after 3 days on Lash, so just hoping I can last to watch the game tonight.
Dont think we realise how lucky we are over here, Went to watch Benfica Saturday, fanzone was really good.
But the atmosphere was absolutely dreadful, one of worst ive experienced. 55000 attendence, be lucky if there was 30000 inside, season tickets holder obviously go when they feel like it.
Had one annoying song, half of fans knew very little about football. The standard and pace of game, was terrible, you can see why english football is dominating the sport in terms of global viewers.
it was boring has hell.
And lisbon as a place, is a total dump. Be very good for anyone who like drugs, (constantly accosted asking if you want coke) and trans prostitutes, All blantanty about.
Now lets home coventry can do us a favour.
Big ask but it is very doable
Coventry 4 Ipswich 1
Come on sky Blues 💙
Coventry still have a very useful forward line so we just have to hope they are clinical and can ruffle the feathers of the Ipswich promotion top 2 elect bandwagon.
Not impossible but the odds are not with Coventry tonight but the adrenalin must be off the scale for the Ipswich players so a rash tackle or two leading to a sending off may be what is required for Leeds to be able to realistically clinch top 2 on Saturday.
My heart says 2-1 to Coventry but my head is more Coventry 0 Ipswich 2 but we'll soon find out one way or the other by 10pm if there is another twist in this craziest of crazy championship seasons.
Come on Coventry.

Macca - we need your famous and world renowned positivity tonight 👍

I will do my best TLB but I may miss the first 20 to 30 minutes as I'm about to prepare and have my dinner but yes positive vibes aimed at Coventry winning all the way tonight. 😊 👍
