----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fortunately 6th will be a Europa place also providing City win the cup final. If we beat Burnley at home on Saturday (I think we will despite our issues) then it will take an unlikely sequence of results not to finish 6th at worst.
If we finish 6th and United win the cup final then we end up in the Farmers Conference - which I wouldn’t want us taking seriously anyway, has absolutely no prestige and is worth about a tenth of a league cup
Not winning Europa or at least getting to final really annoys me. It is a very good competition. With no CL dropouts you are in with a good chance. It becomes more or less the Conference league in terms of quality.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is a good comp and the quality this year was off the charts - the quarters saw Benfica, Milan and Liverpool all knocked, they have 15 European cups between them. West Ham who had won the conference the year before went out. German Title winner Leverkusen progressed, European cup winners Marseille progressed. Inaugural conference farmer winner Roma progressed and Atalanta.
With no CL drop downs next years comp will not have quality anywhere near as high as that. Spurs, Newcastle, Frankfurt and Bilbao will be favourites - it’s a serious opportunity for those 4 sides.
The uplift to 36 teams and no drop downs will seriously affect the competitiveness of these comps. The Conference league could have Chelsea, Napoli/Lazio, Valencia, Ajax - could be a rare year where the quality is higher in the Farmers league than the Europa

The way it works is that teams are still seeded into 4 different pots, you are then drawn to play 2 teams from each pot, 1 home and 1 away.
So there is some control over the quality of the draw.
Looking at the Europa though, Spurs could draw Bologna and Freiburg from pot one whilst Newcastle get Bilbao and Frankfurt - so there is still a big chance of an unbalanced draw.
Newcastle don’t have any real euro pedigree so will almost certainly not be in pot one whereas Spurs are guaranteed to be. This also helps Spurs as we cannot be drawn against Newcastle, therefore we are likelier to draw less capable opponents compared to say Frankfurt and Bilbao.
As much as we wanted to be in the CL, I do hope we try to seize this chance - it’s the only comp we will be in without an elite side next season

no, not like that at all.
its actually much fairer than it was before much much fairer.
now every team regardless of what pot you are in wil play 2 pot 1 teams, 2 pot 2 teams etc... much fairer ... means that other pot 1 team will play other pot 1 teasm which never happened before and pot 4 teams will play other pot 4 teams again which never happened before. You pot no longer gurantees you easier games like it did before
It's a bit early to tell as not all the league positions are done and dusted, but if I'm not mistaken 3rd in Portugal doesn't even get a CL qualification berth, which means that Porto will be in the Europa League too. They've already won this competition twice this century, so I think they'd have to be considered amongst the potential candidates.
You could also get Atalanta in there for Italy, as Serie A is still tight and they may well have this year's EL final as a distraction.
Then there will also be a number of teams dropping into the CL from the CL qualifiers.
That could include a number of strong sides too, such as Benfica, one or both of the big Turkish teams, or RB Salzburg, all of whom have the potential to upset sides from the bigger leagues.

There will of course be some decent sides, but we’re not going to see a Quarter final line up like this years.
I thought 3rd in Portugal was a CL qualifiers spot? Could be wrong.
According to the tables on Flashscore, 3rd awards an EL Group Stage berth.
Porto aren't even guaranteed third though. They visit Braga on the final day, and Braga are just a point behind (although Braga have also got a toughie away to Vitoria Guimarães before then).
Didn't Liverpool win the League Cup, meaning that an extra space is automatically given to the next team down in the league, meaning 6th will still qualify for the Europa, and not the conference?

Okay, I've just done a bit of research. For some reason EFL cup winners no longer qualify for the Europa League, which seems harsh. They only enter the Conference league meaning 6th is NOT a Europa League place as I first thought. Strike is right, 6th will only qualify if City win the cup.

That’s it fridge, at the start of the season top 4 get CL, 5th gets Europa, FA cup winner gets Europa and League cup gets Conference.
The cups tend to be won by the top 6 moving euro spots down in the league to top 7 and if in the future England finish in the top 2 co efficient table then Europe could go down as far as 8th. Give it a decade and it will be top 10.
So yeah if Newcastle catch us then we are waiting on the cup final result to know which euro comp we will be in. If Newcastle and Chelsea catch us then we will need City to win or we will miss out on Europe altogether.
Beating Burnley on Saturday will more or less guarantee Euro entry though in my opinion, I can’t see both Chelsea and Newcastle winning out and United winning the FA cup - even with “Spursiness”

This is it. If we win against Burnley and Sheff United, as we should do, 5th is guaranteed no matter what the others. Even if we dropped points to one of those two, Newcastle will have to go to Old Trafford and win, which, despite their issues, is bloody tough. I can see Chelsea winning all their remaining games though but they're 6 behind so a win against Burnley and a draw against Sheff United would be enough (on account their goal difference is creeping up).
If we don't do it from here, we don't deserve Europe at all.

Absolutely, in fact I would say Ange should walk if we somehow manage to finish below these woeful Chelsea and United sides this season.
Burnley have to win on Saturday or they are relegated. That means if we can avoid an early brain fart concession then they will have to open up against us and I fancy we will put them to the sword. Win it and it’s done, I think Chelsea will drop points.
Would be great if Ange came out at the start of next season and said words to the effect of “ we have a great opportunity in the Europa and will go flat out for it”

Worth remembering that Forest have Chelsea at home and a win for them sees them stay up. Burnley will try but I get the feeling they know it's done for them now. It's doubtful they'll camp in against us because they need the win, which probably helps us.
Forest won't want to go to the final day needing a win at Burnley to stay up so I can see them absolutely going for it against Chelsea to get the job done on their own patch. If they take an early lead, I can see Burnley heads dropping.
If we fail to even get 5th… then it’s an absolute disgrace, seeing as we’ve got to play the bottom 2 teams!!

We’re in free fall though and that can be tough to stop. I think we will beat Burnley and then be on the beach. Will the players really care about finishing 5th instead of 6th - I doubt it. Worth pointing out also that our record at Bramall lane is abysmal, they are a bit of a bogey side for us

8 group games against 8 different opponents, 4 home and 4 away
=====
This is where it gets ridiculous. So one team could end up playing Madrid, Barca, Juve, Milan, City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern? While another team plays Young Boys and Ludogorets type games?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
no, not like that at all.
its actually much fairer than it was before much much fairer.
now every team regardless of what pot you are in wil play 2 pot 1 teams, 2 pot 2 teams etc... much fairer ... means that other pot 1 team will play other pot 1 teasm which never happened before and pot 4 teams will play other pot 4 teams again which never happened before.
