Yeah I agree with that and with so much needing to be done with our squad I can understand why keeping slabhead as back up is an option. But its still madness that we are left with having to keep a 31 year old on 200k a week as a back up.

I kind of agree, the stick he got was over the top but while he has improved he hasn't been particularly good either.

It's not his fault he cost us so much or that we gave him such high wages but he still isn't good enough for the club or the right fit.

His lack of pace which causes him to sit deeper than EtH would probably like does have an impact on the space in front which gives opponents more room to attack us. Of course it's not all slabheads fault and you can't fault his effort but he just isn't good enough (and never has been) and not a single club would be stupid to have such a highy paid defender sitting on the bench.

I've said it numerous times already but I really do think the loss of Martinez this season has been huge.

Whilst Martinez has obviously been a loss this season, I'm not sure it would have made a signifcant difference, because we still would have been over-run in midfield and giving up loads of chances. It's been the 'tactical approach' as a whole to defending by the team, rather than particular individual players. Even when Martinez did play, we were stiil vulnerable.
I don't think we would have been much better if say Martinez was fit but Maguire / Varane were both missing for a considerable time - it's the playing style (or lack of it) that is costing us

RR made a very valid point in that the criticism Maguire received was far worse than any redemption.

I disagree with Process, I’d rather have Maguire as it stands. Varane’s injuries are only going to get worse. Maguire recently has performed as a solid (not immense) Premier League CB. He doesn’t suit the modern game for a team wanting to play a high line as he has no pace and turns like a lorry.

I have a feeling we might end up keeping one of Evans or Lindelof for another season, and therefore recruit 1 new CB this year, and another next year.
If we can get 2 CBs, great, but if we got 1 CB, 1 CM and 1 forward this year, and could get just one more, I would rather have another CM.

But Martinez is key to the playing style EtH wants and it showed last season. Martinez would have got more out of Onana, he would have also been better at bridging the gaps between midfield as well as allowing our fullbacks to push on more giving better support to our wide attackers, his lose was huge.. But as well as his footballing ability his leadership was massively missed, so often we capitulated in games because we lack leaders.

Hard to judge Martinez's appearances this season, don’t think he’s ever been match fit when played which is why he got injured again and again.

Yeah, some players get away with murder, whilst others are very harshly judged.

Maguire and Casemiro for example.

But that's hardly saying anything. The OP has a point because I've read a lot about slabhead's 'redemption' which is a little overboard, he's improved but done nothing special. He has also missed 9 matches through injury since December.

He’s been bang average and had missed plenty of football also. Not sure what you are watching.

Casemiro has been easily our worst player this season.

Whaaaat?

Have you forgotten about Onana getting us eliminated from the Champs League, or Rashford playing like a League 2 player?

Maguire is slow, clumsy, and indecisive on the ball.

Yes, Varane should go, but that's not good reason to keep Maguire.

Shaw is usually our first choice LB, Varane is gone (Evans probably as well), so the core we're left with is Martinez, Maguire, Lindelof and Kambawala.

If we sign a CB to play alongside Martinez, we could only lose one of Maguire or Lindelof. Which will leave us with New CB, Martinez, Maguire or Lindelof and Kambawala with Shaw an extra option.

Maguire is 31 and Lindelof is 29. Out of the two, I'd sell Maguire first due to age and wages, get in another CB next season and sell Lindelof then. We also need a LB that can stay fit and gives us the same level as Shaw when he's at his best.
