Not seeing too many viable candidates who would do better than Southgate here
Don't think there's too many tournament winners that do it by playing flowing football is there?

Neo!
Who would you have instead?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spalletti, Nagelsmann, Deschamps, Koeman, Scaloni, Bielsa
All much better than Safegate
I mean yeah, not against those. Not sure how attainable/realistic they are though. We’ll find out next year probably.
Safegate has done alright but ultimately won nothing with a side he should have won something (although fair of some disagree on that)
Expect this is his last tournament and best chance so we will see, probably how his time as manager will be judged as a whole.

Anyone got any viable alternative to Southgate? Someone who would make the most of this squad which many seem to think should clean up at International level.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it's easy to say that Southgate is terrible, but I don't think he is that bad, in what is an unrelenting job. Sure, the attacking options are great, but the defensive issues don't make it easy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unrelenting job? It's not anything like as hard as club management. It's a few friendlies and qualifiers per year and then a big tournament for 3-4 weeks every 2 years.
His job is piiisss easy and he is paid a fortune and plays rubbish anti-football with a great talented bunch of players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course international management is not as intensive as day to day management. But i personally feel that the England job is a poisoned chalice. The media just waiting to jump on you when you don't win the next tournament, everyone expecting a big win and great performance for every match, the expectation and managing that really is crazy.
To be successful in international football, probably involves a fair bit of luck, as it is essentially cup competitions that you are judged on.
It would be like judgiing club managers only on cup results rather than the league performance on a yearly basis.
And if it really was that piiisss easy, several manager before seem to have failed.
Southgate has had enough transfer windows to get the balance of that squad right. no excuses
Thought it may be worth mentioning the records that Southgate has broken since managing England
Most games without defeat (22)
Most games without conceding (7)
Biggest Win at a European Championship (4-0)
Biggest Win at a World Cup (6-1)
Biggest Win in a competitive match (10-0)

It's all about world cups and Euros, in many ways it's a harsh barometer, but Eng have managed one final since '66, and you do feel that this team should be winning something, so it seems to be last chance for Southgate.

I bet a pound to the penny that whoever comes in next won’t be cleaning up the trophies either though.

By producing our biggest wins in history? Sure, okay.
How many England sides have played thrilling football?
How many national sides in general consistently play entertaining football? Isn't it in the nature of the international game that teams are a bit less tactically coherent because they only get a few days a year training together, and they tend to be quite cagey in tournaments because everyone is tired and one mistake can eliminate you?

That's what I mean by unrealistic expectations. Every non-win result is met with OTT criticism. Southgate's record matches up to anyone else bar '66 but I accept that he has had chances to win one and maybe time for someone else to have a go
