Kieran McKenna - your new manager

For me it makes perfect sense to have the conversation with him but with the other managers that are available I'd be amazed if it ends up being McKenna.

Don't think it's the right move for the club or for him to return just yet. Maybe if he goes to Brighton or somewhere like that and does well then its a possibility for the future.

I think it's going to be Poch personally. None of them tick all the boxes but I think Poch ticks more than the others.

I’m not sure any Chelsea related examples are at all helpful, given the way their club is run.

It just feels like everyone is in talks with everyone, with the same cliched statements regarding why certain jobs would be right for certain managers.

Managers egos will mean they think they can do a job anywhere, and you just don't know when that big chance will come, so you might feel you need to grab it while you can.

Who knows how the cards will fall, the only certainty now is that ETH seems to be leaving

Or we aren’t in talks with him at all.

Moves like this are interesting cos on one hand it seems like it would generally be bad for McKenna's career, but football is so fickle that this might be the only time he ever gets linked with Chelsea or Utd so you can kind of understand him taking it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
For me it’s worrying it the story is true and he takes the job! Will the players have the respect for him?

And that’s the trouble these days players thinking they’re bigger than the manager!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well going by articles some of the existing players didn't enjoy his training methods when he was part of the backroom staff at Utd.

McKenna has redeemed himself, those same moaning players are still at Utd, quite possibly about to end ETH's career.

It looks like they will end his Utd career!
But unfortunately we don’t have the depth and hunger in the squad for the manager to make changes to the team even if it upsets one or two of the players like City and Liverpool do! Which makes it harder for the manager.

Exactly.

The very top clubs recruit not only the right player with the desired attributes but also the right profile of a person to fit into the culture of the club. Until this winning culture is set by Jim and his team nothing will change, such a change will take time especially at a massive institution like Utd.

If they are talking with McKenna perhaps it's to tell him to hang on at Ipswich, let Ten Hag do some dirty work next season, and then state he's the preferred candidate for Summer 2025 for Ineos Phase 2.

It is silly season though and with quite a few managers out of work and others under pressure then they're pretty easy stories to run to get clicks.

I think it's too soon for McKenna to be taking the United or Chelsea job.

That said, if INEOS feel that McKenna is too talented of a prospect to be allowed to go elsewhere from Ipswich this summer, I can understand if they'd want to roll the dice prematurely.

And any incoming manager to United might find this summer and season of all seasons a bit easier; expectations are low after a poor season - it would be hard to do worse - and everyone recognises that we're about to enter a big transitional phase in terms of resetting the footballing structures from the top down, which will involve (I hope) some much needed deadwood-clearing from the squad.

We're also unlikely to have European football to contend with, meaning a new manager/coach will have more time on the training pitch in their first season. That might be more beneficial to a manager like McKenna than it would someone like Tuchel who is used to navigating domestic and European fixtures simultaneously.

I can also see that hiring a younger, talented and more untested coach like McKenna could be quite harmonious with a recruitment strategy that seeks to target younger players on the cusp of going to the next level rather than signing bigger star names and the egos and man-management challenges we might associate with that. Not to mention we have talented young players already in the squad that might be more naturally receptive to a lesser-known entity like McKenna than established names would be.

With all that said, you could therefore probably make a stronger case - on paper at least - for managers like De Zerbi, Nagelsmann, Amorim or Motta - each of whom are younger, talented managers who have already managed clubs much bigger and at a higher level than Ipswich.

If I were him I’d take the Brighton job but can understand why any manager in todays climate would take a big high paid job like United or Chelsea even if they’re doomed to fail.

More likely goes to Brighton, does well there and gets snapped up by Chelsea where he fails so ends up at United were the media have already labelled him past it.

If Ineos are stupid enough to make decisions that way, then we’re in huge trouble.

I suspect not though.

Too soon for a big club, he needs to prove himself at an established premier league club.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What does ‘proving himself’ look like, with Ipswich?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doing well with them this season, staying up . He’s being very calculated in leaving them (some may say cowardly) as he knows he’ll get battered with them next season and does not want it to stain him while his stock is high, from a career perspective it makes sense
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don’t buy it.

The way he’d have to say the team up would bear zero resemblance to what he’d need to do at United.

Managers adept at keeping sides up are rarely managers who thrive at big clubs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
show he can be successful at the level Man Utd play at, which he hasnt done yet. He may need to leave Ipswich to better demonstrate that however
