wouldnt it be great if things were actually as simple at this

In the Athletic write-up of this story it says:

"McKenna is among a number of candidates United will consider should Ten Hag exit the club."

This was always the most likely context for the original story.

The club have said his future will rightly, not depend on the outcome of the FA Cup.

I think we will know either way come Monday.

Something to consider is the risk Arsenal took when bringing in Arteta. He’d never managed, but knew the club and he’s been a great success.

And didn’t have fans in the stadium for over a year, which saved his job.

Well run clubs shouldn't be swayed by emotional fans

I am positive. Probably more than you. Im looking forward to it. I didnt go last year and this year I am. But Im not relying on any spititual Faith, to make United win. Im relying on Erlk and the lads.

I can also see that hiring a younger, talented and more untested coach like McKenna could be quite harmonious with a recruitment strategy that seeks to target younger players on the cusp of going to the next level rather than signing bigger star names and the egos and man-management challenges we might associate with that. Not to mention we have talented young players already in the squad that might be more naturally receptive to a lesser-known entity like McKenna than established names would be.
------------------------
That sounds a lot like what was said about ETH when he was appointed. He was a young talented untested coach. Untested as in PL experience. He is very talented, got Ajax playing attacking football and got great results. Also very good with young talent.

Whats different this time? Nothing.

Real and Barca fans are owned by their members who vite on Presidents, and therefore have a huge say on football decisions.

That's not how it works in England.

Most emotional Real Madrid fans are not members. But they are a well run club swayed by them.

What's different is who is overseeing the footballing side of the club and, [hopefully] as a result of that a much improved player recruitment operation.

ETH did an excellent job at Ajax and I was pleased we brought him in. The caveat I'd maybe add is that getting Ajax playing excellent attacking football is probably a lot easier than at many clubs. Not only did his team have some outstanding talents like FDJ, De Ligt, DvdB, Ziyech etc, but Ajax are famed for their academy and footballing education. There's a coherency to the way they play from youth levels all the way through. I don't see that there's been a coherency to our recruitment under ETH in terms of getting our squad looking closer to the profiles of player that had Ajax playing great stuff beyond literally signing some of his ex players in Onana, Martinez and Antony (that latter of whom isn't up to it at PL level), and a few squad players that he's worked with before like Amrabat & Eriksen.

There's an argument that I'm sympathetic to that suggests ETH should be given more time to shift the club's playing style into something closer to what he was doing at Ajax and that with proper football people upstairs and improved transfer policy and squad building then we could get there. Lots of excellent managers have had bad seasons in the course of making more significant long term gains, including Klopp & Arteta. I've said before that I'd not be surprised if INEOS stick with ETH going into next season.

But we should also recognise that INEOS have literally gutted and torn up the existing structures in place and put their own people in. I can imagine they might also want to do that with the manager so that their own people are in place at all significant levels of the club.

If I were McKenna though, the Brighton job at this stage of his development would look by far the most tempting prospect.

Managers that I think would be a complete disaster for us: McKenna, Potter, Southgate

Managers who might do OK, might be disastrous, but it's hard to see that they're much better than ten Hag right now: Pochettino, De Zerbi

Managers with at least some winning pedigree at the top level but are not without a few question marks: Tuchel, Zidane

That's pretty much where I am on the names we've been linked with. Differing levels of disinterest.

It's very much a court of public opinion, as there are around 100,00 members, which means they're numerous enough to provide a fair representation of the fans.

The club has an annual GA which has to pass the annual accounts and vote on major decisions. All members have voting rights, but they're organised into voting groups and when a president's considered to be doing a good job, he can basically get most decisions passed at the GA.

Some years ago, Pérez submitted a change in the requisites for members to be able to stand for president whereby he was basically the only eligible candidate, and the motion passed.

He's done an excellent job from a financial perspective, so the fans are more or less happy with the status quo, but there will come a time when he has to step aside and they will probably have to change the eligibility criteria because otherwise they wouldn't be able to elect anyone.
