Pep Guardiola: “Lisandro Martínez is top 5 centre-backs in the world. He made the difference on this game by playing passes through our defence”.
We’re a completely different side when he’s fit.
Love that guy. Passion, ability, hard work. A proper defender.
There is no doubting Martinez's quality. If he had been fit all season, of course it would have helped, but one player alone wouldn't have stopped us being so open to so many attacks / giving away chance etc - that's more of a general approach to the game and style of play etc
It's not as simple as one player, true. But when you create an instability in one part of the team, it can result in imbalances elsewhere. Look at how vulnerable and unbalanced Liverpool's midfield suddenly appeared last season when they were primarily suffering from defensive injuries.
That's not to say that ETH couldn't have found better tactical solutions to the problem.
I said yesterday I thought he was the difference.
Glad to see Pep agrees
He's a beast. Brings a lot to the team.

It was the whole team that made the difference - better effort, better cohesion etc. Injuries have an effect, but player attitude and coaching have an effect.
It all came good yesterday.....was it a sign or a false dawn

Obviously it’s more than just one player, but for me, Martinez was the biggest different between previous games and yesterday.
Suddenly we actually looked solid.
He comes across as being an intelligent footballer as well in that interview and you can see why the fans love the guy.
Lisandro is good but a lot of what he offers can be gotten from new age defenders. Finding a young defender with those abilities should be our next goal.
We also need to look into our fitness schedule

It's not one player though. Varane and Shona lost most of the season.
Plus Harry and Lindeolof the back ups.
Plus Mount from the midfield, and the poor season from Casemiro compared to last season. And others, AWB for a while , our French striker of course, which meant Rasmus had to lead the line.
Greenwood, Sancho and Ronaldo shouldn't be overlooked. It's made for a trying season.
If we think the loss of the CBs made a difference, how about the loss of Greenwood and Sancho to our forward line.

Nice to see he's recovered from getting bent over by Salah.
If you mean Shaw, he's not better yet.

I'm very chilled. Of course I am happy with yesterday's result. But I'm also realistic of where we are. I'm not going to deny where we are and paint a rosy picture if it doesn't feel like one
Love that interview. He speaks so well and very authentically and passionately. His quality on the pitch has obviously been hugely missed but you can also imagine he must be a loss in the changing room and the training pitch when he’s been out.
