It’s made harder, of course, because good managers understood that Gerrard was not the right player to play in a midfield two and that he was more value player off of the front man or on the right

OP, Rooney has an opinion just like the rest of us.
Personally, I think the English mentality leads people to Gerrard more than Scholes.
I also think their roles in their respective teams showed that Scholes was the better footballer… even if Gerrard had a more varied set of attributes.

Look at all this hullabaloo, it's more complex than the theory of relativity. If Scholes was better than Gerrard you'd just come out and say it, but you can't because he wasn't. Thanks for proving the OP right Winnie.

You know it's Scholes because you and Kash still need to post articles about it, very desperate!!
But i will still give this article 5 stars because we all know deep down we love winding each other up, and this article has and will always certainly do the trick
Arrigo Sacchi said of Gerrard: “When I was director of football at Real Madrid I had to evaluate the players coming through the youth ranks. We had some who were very good footballers. They had technique, they had athleticism, they had drive, they were hungry. But they lacked what I call knowing-how-to-play-football. They lacked decision making. They lacked positioning. They didn’t have the subtle sensitivity of football: how a player should move within the collective. And for many I wasn’t sure they were going to learn. You see, strength, passion, technique, athleticism, all of these are very important. But they are a means to an end, not an end in itself. They help you reach your goal, which is putting your talent at the service of the team and, by doing this, making both of you and the team greater. In situations like that, I just have to say, Gerrard is a great footballer, but perhaps not a great player.”

The funniest thing ever in the history of football. Even beats Groots dribble against Bayern.
Club rivalries aside for a minute, how many other players played with both Gerrard and Scholes as much as Rooney did?
If Rooney says that Gerrard was the better player, I think that pretty much settles it to be honest.

He said Scholes was the best he’s played with but that Ronaldo is the most talented.
Schole said he was better so that’s that really. Fair reasons too.

"Plymouth Manager view trumps Man City Manager view in Scholes vs Gerrard debate"
Sacchi retired when Gerrard was a teenager I think and did his best work before he was even born. Either way he was a failure outside of one stint in Milan, and even that’s debatable.
Fergie, Jose and Zidane all wanted him though, whilst Scholes and Rooney say he’s better.
It is what it is.

Gerrard was a fantastic player, of course they wanted him.
Doesn't mean they wanted Scholes any less or that Gerrard would have displaced Scholes - you're clutching at straws.
Sacchi's comments articulately describe my thoughts on Gerrard and why he was moved around and ended up playing off the front man.
We're dealing in fine margins here - they were all amazing players - but that quote I think is pertinent to the point that people are trying to make when they tell you why they believe Scholes was better.
He ended up playing DM and got in team of the season (again) for that position too.
Can we only have people posting who know what they’re on about please OP?
Oh look, Robbing has to try and be superior because he can't handle an alternative opinion... what a shock.
I never claimed he didn't end up back at DM - so maybe you should concentrate on your own reading skills.
It's simply a fact that Benitez came in and moved him off to the right, and then into the 10 - there was a reason for that.
Oh, it’s just the way you wrote ‘ended up’

Obviously in the context of when he was originally moved from the central position, spent some time on the right and then settled into the 10.
Robbing doing what Robbing does...
People need to just respect that this is a matter of opinion.
Rooney says Gerrard, Pep says Scholes.
We can all trade names of people who have said either... it doesn't really mean much.
What is pathetic is when people just can't handle an alternative opinion, so they have to try and mock it.
I suppose Pep didn't used to rate Scholes but as each year goes by, he rates him more and more - just like the rest of us.
