Agreed. Other than his 3rd at 18 Bryson really fell over the and rode his luck.
Never liked him but even I felt bad for him after that. That has to be one of the biggest chokes of all time in any sport, not just golf.

First under 3 foot putt he's missed all season in over 285 attempts.
The guy made up a 3 shot deficit to get in contention and played to 4 under.
He did do amazingly well on one of the toughest golf courses ever.
A massive shame for him. He is one of.the most talented ever. That putt will haunt him for ever.

Exactly! 👍
To get himself into contention like he did was brilliant, I wouldn’t go down the route of saying he bottled it like some of JA606’s golf experts, but we’ve come to expect it of them.
So it’s not just football that BRAINDEAD666 is clueless about

I'm a big fan of Rory and felt stunned and gutted for him but his unravelling began with his shocking club selection at the par 3 15th hitting a 7 iron instead of an 8 iron that Faldo and Riley on commentary said straight away his club choice before he hit his tee shot seemed to be far too strong and so it proved over shooting the green and getting his first of 3 late bogeys.
His caddie was no help as it seems he's just a mate who rakes the bunkers carrys the bag and dare not disagree with Mcllroy's decisions and sure enough wrong club selection on the 17th and 18th plus the incredible 30 inch missed put on 16 and tragically his final short put miss on the 72nd hole made him look like a sad forlorn looking fellow that I think if he doesn't get a more experienced caddie to offer him a calming word and sage club choice advise he will feck it up again at Troon in July..... I was happy for Dechambeau as he is a very charasmatic likeable character but Rory didn't half gift it to him, great theatre though.

But he dropped 3 shots in the last 4 holes to go from a 2-shot lead to a 1-shot deficit. Dropping 3 shots to his opponent in the last 4 holes of the tournament and missing two 2-3 footers that he hasn't missed ALL season from almost 500 similar putts - that seems like bottling it to me.
For sure, his reaction to the defeat suggests HE thinks he bottled it, so I doubt what you're saying is of much comfort to him.
The first short putt was a shockingly bad miss. The second one was a tough one.
Be interesting to see if he skips this week now and how he plays at Troon. Over the four days, it’s the best he’s played in a major in a long time and that’s the waste area been more penal, he would have won by a margin.
That’s a very tough one for him to get over though. He’s done it several times before but that really was a biggie.

You're right about the club selection, and the caddy. I think it was Zane Scotland that said, if Steve Williams was Rory's caddie he would have talked him out of those club selections.
A player who’s built up a good lead then blows it has “bottled it”!
……
Rory’s biggest lead was two and and Bryson had the drivable par four to play and should have actually eagled it.
In all my years of playing golf I have never seen anyone have so much luck with tee shots in the wasteland as Bryson did yesterday: I think he missed 13 fairways.
You don't consistently put yourself in contention to win tournaments by being one of "sports ultimate bottlers."
The putt on 18 will undoubtedly haunt him but kudos to Byson for his bunker shot on the 18th. His back 9 (especially off the tee) was erratic and with a bit of luck (sometimes that's what you need) and good scrambling he kept himself in contention.
On a side note was great to see Tom McKibben (another Holywood academy player) make the cut in his first US Open.

For off line tee shots, it wasn’t anywhere near as penal as I thought it was going to be, or should have been.
Not surprised Bryson did well given that.
I know nothing about Golf, but I too found that Bryson got away with some bad tee shots.
Surely it should get to the stage where they need to have a proper out of bounds line or tighten it up. I.e., Fairway, first cut, rough, then out of bounds. Most of the time they had a good lie in that weird wasteland on the course.
It seems like people like Bryson simply do not care about hitting fairways, and instead would rather just hit it as long as possible.

..................
Bryson was in it about ten times, would be my guess and only twice was he punished, once on the last and once on the 13th.

Yep. Other than a shot here and there Bryson was very poor. He won’t get the headlines like Rory but Cantlay should be kicking himself also.

Bryson was in it about ten times, would be my guess and only twice was he punished, once on the last and once on the 13th.
