Does Southgate really instruct the players to walk around the pitch. Sometimes you have to put the blame on these sluggish players.
No one seemed to want the ball.

This was my concern coming into tournament when I saw the squad, who was missing and the physical condition of a lot of the best players. The preparation in this regard hasn’t been good, unlike past tournaments.

It was surprising to see Foden and Saka not really pressing any of the Danish players. I too was thinking is that coaching or mentality? The answer is clearly coaching
We do need one of Mainoo or Wharton in this team. A player who understands how to scan, move, receive and progress the ball which both do better than the other midfielders we have. Trent just isn't capable of those things.
Gallagher is Southgate's new Mount. He'll probably be starting the next game and in the knockouts unfortunately because of his energy and work-rate.
There are players who need to stand up and do better and we haven't come into this tournament in the best shape but this team is just a sad reflection of a cowardly manager.
If you’re going to play Foden wide, Kane up front and Bellingham in AM, then Trent in MF makes absolutely no sense, he needs runners.
So you need a midfielder comfortable on the ball to link the midfield to attack, and we’re lacking that. Wharton or Mainoo are the only players capable in this squad and they’re very young. If you’re going to take them though, you have to use them imo.

Well no he's not actually.
I don't want to criticise TAA and say he's rubbish or whatever, he's clearly class or he wouldn't be a starter for Liverpool's most successful team in decades. It just feels that G.S experiment with him hasn't worked. That doesn't make TAA a bad player it just means for this selection of players G.S system (whatever that is) isn't working and I want to politely as possible say he's one of the players that shouldn't start the next game

Your faith in mainoo is ott. Whilst he might offer something, painting him as the missing piece is just daft. He’ would have made little difference.
And I know about players throwing their arms at each other in frustration because a lot of us have watched United for the last 12 months, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years. Mainoo has shown composure amongst chaos

as pretty much all the subs in 2 games have done 3 including iceland. its not a player issue. sure southgate isnt telling them not to walk about and be outworked outfought but its what hes paid to guard against and make sure isnt allowed lol. 2 games in a row hes been outdone by the oppo manager on pretty much everything, including getting their teams set up and up for it!

I do feel the same way, I appreciate throwing him in now leaves him exposed to massive criticism, online abuse if he makes one mistake but I'm always the optimist that a player can deal with it and they have family around them if something goes wrong. From what I've seen of Mainoo he comes across as so level headed, and the way he plays he just wants control in the middle of the pitch and to contribute going forward (hence his goals).
I know a lot of people will disagree but I feel like a combo of Rice (covering the defensive line), Mainoo (trying to maintain control in the middle of the pitch), and Bellingham (contributing toward the forward play from midfield) is such a nice balance.
G.S has tried to experiment so far, but I feel the above experiment would work if the right players are selected around those three
