The pundits job is to critique the performance and tell it as they see it. Do we want to see sugar-coated opinions so to not upset players?
Do think any of the pundits were over the top in their criticisms.
I mean, James McClean has been far more aggressive with his criticisms on Irish TV and no doubt they have seen that as well, are they going to cry about him or get on with their jobs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If people were critical of your work all day long how would you feel?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If I was performing as bad as England and was doing something I love at the highest and most prestigious level I would take all the criticism going and work harder.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hmm well England have 4 points and have a good chance of winning the group. That's all that matters at this stage. Work smart over working hard amiright?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your not wrong
----------------------------------------------------------------------
DJ has a point in what he's saying but I don't remember if Italy played crap or not during the WC 2006 tournament, only that they won it. If England play like they have through the whole tournament and somehow win the thing. Will Lineker and Shearer or anyone else supporting England whinge then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course not

Half the issue here is we’re not an entertaining side, people don’t like it. Personally I could give a toss.

Greece 2004 were eye bleeding to watch
Portugal 2016 were racking useless up until about the semis when they just had to beat faaacking Wales.
Spain 2010 - epically boring
Brazil 2002 - England were the only half decent side they faced

It’s tournament football - it’s all about results. Performances and entertainment count for nothing
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good points about some previous winners. They weren't all entertaining but excelled at a certain aspect of the game. Though I'm not sure yet what England are excelling at. They've got good players undoubtedly. Perhaps with a lot of them being PL players they need to excell at simply speeding the game up to something that's quintessentially Premier League. Risky yes, but maybe it'll work this year

I watched the Shearer Linaker podcast yesterday and there wasn’t anything they said that was over the top or incorrect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Didn't Lineker use the word 'sh!t' to describe England's performance the other night?

posted on 24/6/24

Lineker and Shearer did nothing wrong and Kane is well within his rights to defend his team in reply.

Much ado about nothing.

This wasn't near the vitriol same players have had in the past. Just a critique of a performance.

I think he did. Is that an act of war now?

Until Kane makes some comments about Lineker & shearer after the next game! Or if Kane scores maybe a cupped ear in celebration

Work harder - yes I’m sure the issue is we’re not putting enough effort in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not necessarily work harder, but I'd be expected to take constructive criticism on board. If then my performance didn't improve I'd be sacked.

Criticism comes with being a pro Footballer, be it England or Wycombe. If it's not personal then what's the problem? Kane will know he and England have been sub par.

Kane doesn't have much of an argument to be honest as he was one of the major culprits of being really crap.

I remember the 2010 world cup opening game vs USA where ITV's coverage tried to sugar coat a poor performance from England with very little actual analysis and a lot of empty reassuring words for us as viewers.

Then when I watched the highlights on BBC, the pundits were much more critical, with a lot more technical analysis.

I can see both sides of the argument, but as an avid football fan I prefer not to be lied to.

I was expecting some drama here but neither kane or the pundits said anything remotely wrong.

Pundits have a duty to objectively describe a match, and I think the BBC team were spot on in describing the shortcomings of the England team. If they were indulging in personal abuse, then Kane would be justified in calling them out on failing to drive previous England teams to success. But they weren't. I suspect the England camp is a bit brittle and sensitive because it rings true.

Definitely don't what the pundits to be sycophants.

That's some nice objective BBC coverage right there. Can't wait to see what they're saying in 10 years! The 7 year old kids growing up now not paying attention to the punditry and just enjoying kicking a ball about are in for a super fun time in the future

I think the issue is that they are so used to praise in the PL as they are generally PL based players. And when they are playing abroad then they still only get praise. These pundits are actually fans of the England team though so when England players let them down they get emotionally affected and don't just sweep it under the carpet to constantly try and portray the English players in a positive light like they do in domestic football.

You think the spawny Italians will be getting it easy this morning in the Gazzetta?

Meh, it's an entertainment industry. Can't stand the anodyne p!sh that is most of the beeb's output. Let's be honest the cutting opinion of a Souness or Keane is more realistic like what it would be down the pub but from the standpoint of having been there and done it.

In saying that the shock jock Talkscheite stuff is even worse.

Whilst I think the players are trying to win they can only do what the manager tells them. Does anyone really believe the players enjoy sitting on a 1-0? Yes, tourney football is different but still. I tongue in cheek said there should be a 6 tackle type rule in footy - do something with possession or give it up.

Harsh when you watch a Pep team constantly probing with that possession for a better result but it was in reaction to the scheite Clarke served up.
