Somewhat unfair that the teams playing later in the round might know better what they need to do to secure 3rd place than those playing at the weekend.

DJ - Austria can’t play the winner of group F no matter what

posted on 26/6/24

All eyes on group F really, that is where Englands fate will be decided. If Georgia or the Czechs win tonight then Hungary are out and England avoid the Netherlands.

Can’t see Romania hammering Slovakia by 4 or Slovakia hammering Romania by 5. That one is a non starter for me.

Germany will beat Denmark
I expect Italy to narrowly beat the Swiss - maybe pens
I think Austria will play Czechs and win narrowly
Spain will hump whoever they get -Turkey/Slovakia
England to narrowly beat Netherlands/Slovakia
Portugal to beat Slovenia
France will beat Romania
Belgium - lose to Holland, but beat Slovenia

That would set up mouth watering QF

Spain vs Germany
England vs Italy
France vs Portugal
Austria vs Belgium/Holland

Yeah the set up is absolutely ridiculous all ends up. 36 group games to knockout 8 sides and be left with the proper tournament.

Would love it to go back to 16 sides, that was ace. Unfortunately, it’s a better of time before we have a 32 team competition (from 55 UEFA nations) at which point it will be a faaacking joke, you will have groups like Germany, Bosnia, Poland, Estonia with the top 2 progressing.

If Georgia or the Czechs win today then we will be playing 3rd in group E, if they don’t then it’s the Dutch. That’s the realistic scenarios.

Georgia and the Czechs ain't gonna win today (famous last words).

The new format is absolutely crap. Too much jeopardy has been taken away in MD3 and as somebody has pointed out above a few nations that play last on the gameweek know what they need to do to get through which can be an advantage. Afterall some nations are competing against more than just the teams in their group but other third place sides.

Scrap it and have a rethink for 2028. This doesn't work for me.

England (on paper) have a decent run to the final!!!!!!!

There are or should be some cracking games on the other side of the draw. trying to pick a finalist from them is a lottery.

Hmm maybe Czech surprise result v Turkey?

posted on 26/6/24

Don't think Czechia beating Turkey will be a shock result tbf. They are higher in the FIFA rankings after all.

posted on 26/6/24

So if Czechia does beat Turkey then England play Slovakia?

Well, whoever finishes 3rd in that group. Could be Belgium or Romania or Ukraine.

I'd rather play the Dutch... Let's have a challenge and see what happens... Might spring us into life or might show us up, but anything is better than another snore fest trying to break down a stubborn team.

The 3rd place qualifying makes the group stages very dull, since teams know by game 2/3 that a drawer will do a lot of the time.

Exactly, people are talking Turkey should be winning that game 9 times out of 10 - current form and past Euros heroics says otherwise.

The Czechs were a minute away from drawing with Portugal whereas Turkey had lost the game 20 mins in. It will be very tight but 1-0 Czechs is not going to be jaw dropping

Yes - the 2 scenarios now are Netherlands or 3rd in Group E which looks very much like being Slovakia.

We need a win from either Czechs or Georgia to avoid the Netherlands

Haha, good luck with that.

By 2032 we will have a 32 team Euro - that’s how they will get round it - which will be shiete given there is only 55 UEFA constituents and among the 55 are - Gibraltar, Faroes Islands, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Scotland, Malta, Latvia, Belarus, Estonia.

Imagine what qualifying for that monstrosity is going to look like

posted on 26/6/24

This may not please the purists but I wouldn't totally be against a 16 team Euros and also a 16 team Euros Plate/Conference kind of secondary tournament.

A lot of the fun in this Euros has been when some of the 'lesser' nations have played. It'd be a shame if there wasn't an opportunity for some of them to play on a major stage.

posted on 26/6/24

The Euro qualifiers could be:

5 groups of five
5 groups of six

Ten group winners go through and the 10 runners up into a play off. 15 teams plus one host.

Five losing play off teams and the ten third place teams go into the 'Plate/Conference' alongside a host.

Reduce the number of games in the Nations League by making them groups of three.

TV, Hosting and increased revenue are your 3 reasons why that’s a non starter.

No faaacker is watching Estonia vs Latvia

I'm pretty certain people would watch. Some of the games between the eastern European team alone have been good. TV will screen the Conference League so they'd screen this too IMO. Wales, Scotland, NI and Rep of Ireland would take large contingents of fans if they were in it as well as other countries too. It could even be a better spectacle as a lot of these players would see it as the pinnacle.
