And Southgate needs replacing in order to save international football in this country, even if we win it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Southgate is emulating the Deschamps model. Stay tight, give away little and bank on one of your elite attackers to win you the game.
France and England are employing the same tactics but getting different results. England are still struggling to keep goals out, but the elite attackers are producing at crucial moments and getting them through. France by contrast have scored 3 goals all tournament - 2 own goals and a penalty, however, defensively they have been brilliant only conceding once - a pen to Lewandowski.
It’s not pretty, but it’s tournament football - managers have faaack all time to work with players so instead create a system they can all adhere to easily - England have been successful because in the big moments they have the better players than the opposition - I think we have better players than the Dutch as well. So it might not be fully tested until the final.
If Southgate leaves and his record is Semis, Final, Quarters, Final - I think it will be a minimum of 50 years before another England manager gets close to that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or the next one might win it

the quality of football is higher than it's ever been you just inevitably get bored of the children's game you've been watching for decades. you're also now all probably watching more football than ever before because of the accessibility, and overindulgence is not particularly good for enjoyment.

Couldnt disagree more. I watch less football now than ever. And most people I speak to are the same. This despite the accessibility.

Footballs been on the downturn for a decade now in terms of quality and skill imo.
Now players or athletes are built for a system and therefore over time look to rely on that system. See Foden as prime example of this. Without the space created by the man city system where he turns and lashes a shot in, hes struggling as he cant really beat too many players once they are set.
Looking at the premier league just as an example, you don't have players like jay jay okocha, petrov, ravinelli, juninho, pedersen, di canio etc throughout the league.
Even players like mata were kind of, mostly by mourinho, cast aside despite what they produced on a regular basis.
Most teams now if not favourites are low block, set, counter. And most bigger teams, due to reliance on tactics rarely have flair players to break down those sides.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jay Jay Okocha? Fack me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wtf?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its an absolutely horrific shout, he did a few nice flicks and tricks but lets not pretend he was anything more than a few youtube clips that you nostalgically remembered when you were younger.
He played off the striker and had a full season where he didnt manage a goal & had another season where he managed one. He was hardly a creative force either, just a few flicks and tricks.
& Morten Gamst Pederson?!? I mean he was good at freekicks but I'm surprised by that mention.
These players dont have half of the skill and quality (and output!) of players we've had in the last decade like Hazard, Zaha, Payet, Eze, Olise, Rashford, Son, KdB etc
Youtube, the difficulty of accessing football regularly and compilation shows has done wonders for the nostalgia merchants. I often joke that if you put Dele Alli back 25 years ago and you watched his 10 greatest goals videos you'd think he's on a par with Zidane.

Yeah it's really not surprising there's a pretty drab international tournament. I do think we're missing a hero moment like an Iceland or Richarlison WC goal or an Mbappe to score loads but I don't think it means a whole lot.
I mean, comments about how football is worse is just odd IMO. The generation of teenagers emerging now and looking like the best around is very encouraging. Lamal being one of Spain's best players at 16 is mad. Outside that, your Doue's, Bergvall's, Bobb's..
I think Christopher is right. It's people getting old and bitter

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The game is more strategic, mostly borne out of teams trying to cope with the richer sides - there is no point trying to play Man City lite against Man City - you will win once in a hundred. Spurs bored the life out of City and killed them on the counter pre Ange - Wolves do similar to us.
You still get exceptional players producing things off the cuff though like Mbappe, Messi, Bellingham - those players are heavily compensated for.
It’s not even a new thing, back in 86 Argentina essentially employed 8 defensive players and put Canniggia up with Maradona to produce the goods - they then carried that onto Italia 90 which was the lowest scoring tournament ever - these things are cyclical

the quality of football is higher than it's ever been you just inevitably get bored of the children's game you've been watching for decades. you're also now all probably watching more football than ever before because of the accessibility, and overindulgence is not particularly good for enjoyment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Couldnt disagree more. I watch less football now than ever. And most people I speak to are the same. This despite the accessibility.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
well again that's just because you are older and have better things to do. of course you don't find it as exciting as you did when you were younger, that's true for everything
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really? That's sad if true .

So true this.
People remember only the good times/games
People air brush Greece in 2004, the Germany team of 2002, the Championd league final between Milan’s and Juventus or a personal shieteness favourite Spurs vs Wimbledon in the League cup semi first leg in 1999
