Interestingly I watched the Shearer and Cantona interview this weekend and the talked about how poor the defenders are these days and Cantona reckons Shearer would score 60 goals a season in the modern PL era.

This might explain why Koeman picks Weghorst and wasn’t even going to take Zirkzee to the Euros:
‘Koeman's attention then turned to the younger talents making waves in European football. Joshua Zirkzee, the 22-year-old forward making an impact at Bologna, has particularly caught Koeman's eye.
Praising Zirkzee's freedom and strength in his role at Bologna, Koeman, however, pointed out a tactical concern. He noted that Zirkzee, being more of a 'playing number 9', often finds himself out of the typical striker's position in the box.’

Koeman wants a traditional line-leading nine who isn’t going to drop into the space that Simons wants to play in?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That'd make a lot of sense if he wasn't playing Depay up front

Rosso, I love you but your positivity is next level OTT. Still, I guess I’d rather have a site of people with your upbeatness than a site of United We Moans. So thanks for coming back π
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you totally reject the wider point that rectifying lack of goals from wide forwards is just as important as adding goals from the centre forward?
Not sure if it’s been mentioned here but I read Bayern get a 50% cut of the fee.
Sounds like a very sensible signing, will be interesting to see how EtH uses him.

Not totally but it’s more of a theory of what might happen than reality. Like we’re putting the cart before the horse - ie trying to solve not having a prolific goal scorer by adding another sporadic goal scorer. Yes we need more goals from our wide players but there’s no guarantee this guy is going to make that happen.

Weghorst is obviously his plan B. He was never going to take Zirkzee, a player who was yet to be capped by the Netherlands when he made the comment above, as his number one option.
If his plan B was to differentiate with a target man rather than a link player, he’d obviously choose Weghorst over Zirkzee.
Just on the goals thing, I wonder how people would have felt about us pursuing a forward of almost exactly the same age currently playing in Spain?
Looks a stand out talent, but never scored more than ten league goals in a season (eight last term).

Not sure why he's with Harold Shipman though.
Remains to be seen what level he’ll be capable of playing at, but I’m goad we’re going for a striker that has a very different profile to Hojlund, especially since we usually look better with a striker that can play with their back to goal, as Rashford benefits from it.

Some people seem to want another box-playing unit who might deliver 20-25 goals playing in Hojlund’s stead.
Not only would we likely be looking at somewhere in the region of twice Zirkzee’s price for any such player under the age of 30, but more importantly, what would be the point?
